A fantastic thread with info to help you navigate and get care for a Covid-19 infection. Currently, we’re in the second worst wave of the entire pandemic, so best to be prepared.
Meighan Stone@meighanstone

For other #LongCOVID folks, I’m nearing end of COVID reinfection acute phase & thought I’d share my experience & some resources for other chronically ill or disabled folks. This COVID reinfection has been a rough ride– this new variant took me down fast, hard & severely. 1/x

I saw this be used for things it doesn't make sense to use it for so many times by now. 'Oh you want people to not give money to JKR? But you are on Twitter?'
Addison@Dissonant_Sea

@fivelgoeswaste @TaylorLorenz @samtothecam It’s to be dismissive of criticism. To say that people using the app that was hijacked by a billionaire are of the same moral fiber as people who actively seek out the use of AI.

@Biff234523 Misinformation is not the only harm here though. And idk, it may be the your particular algorithm/feed because I see people calling out AI use regularly.

My point is that AI should be called out when it’s used. And I’ve seen essentially zero other people helping me call it out in the community - and certainly not any of the people here who are mad at Taylor. It would be nice to have some of these people help out when it actually matters, like when misinformation is being spread.

The main thing that confuses me about this is the fact that I see so many Covid conscious people calling out Taylor who also have absolutely zero issues with all of the influencers and companies within the COVID/public health space who use AI on a daily basis

@TaylorLorenz @fivelgoeswaste @samtothecam You do realize you just confirmed what I said…? I’m confused as to why you said “No” when it’s the same thing. Also, some people choose to pay Musk for a blue check while others do not, so there’s not even equivalency among users on that front either.

No, it's to say that choosing to remain a DAU of X and directly enriching Elon Musk through that use, when a plethora of other alternatives exist, is a moral choice. And I don't think anyone who's made that tradeoff (which I have too to be clear!) should be lecturing a tech reporter on using Claude Code or searching up a color swatch on an LLM

You could have, and should have, just apologized. Even as a tech reporter your flippant responses of sanism and gaslighting were something I thought very beneath the platform you have. I’m an ally of yours and this is mot any kind of a response you should come back with.

@Biff234523 No Biff, not complete nonsense. Of course it’s true that there’s a lot of misinformation on all sides of everything now with AI, but again—Taylor has shown moral inconsistency, and is *openly* sharing their AI usage (unlike other pages that aren’t as obvious).

@Dissonant_Sea Complete nonsense, half of the posts that I see shared by the covid conscious are AI-generated these days. I would know, because I’m on here every day calling out the constant stream of misinformation.

@Science_FTW_ @TaylorLorenz @pot8um You’re missing the point of what I said. We already know that AI struggles with many tasks, and even if it didn’t, people like myself avoid using it because of the vast array of harms. Like, I don’t care if it could solve every problem I have in update 12.6.2, I’m not using it

at the risk of being called "dumb" again for "not understanding" taylor's ai use, why are we running futile experiments on planet-broiling nightmare machines when the search bar and letters "hex code finder" are rigHT THERE it's already been determined that GenAI sucks 50 flavors of ass. posting shit like this with a huge platform just emboldens people to run their own little bullshit experiments, hence the incoming 200° summers. so can we please! just! not!

It feels like there's a sustained campaign to devalue reading/writing within education from the idea that humanities/social sciences is 'fluff' compared to STEM to the notion that AI can do it better. This is deliberate. Why? Because capitalism is harmed by critical thinking.
Matthew Cole@mattbencole

The biggest cliche in higher ed is that STEM classes are hard and humanities/social sci classes are fluff. But how often I see STEM majors fighting for their lives if there are more than 40 pages of reading per class or essay assignments that presume they've done the reading.

@Science_FTW_ @TaylorLorenz @pot8um People can’t cherry pick which aspects they do or do not care for with their AI usage, do all the things, and then just throw out personal responsibility to not perpetuate harm as “but I have to report on it”.

@Science_FTW_ @TaylorLorenz @pot8um Also, does this look like someone who’s only using it to report on it? Like, I wouldn’t be against AI for automating certain types of tasks, but that’s currently not without harms given how unregulated it all is. x.com/taylorlorenz/s…
Taylor Lorenz@TaylorLorenz

I literally just spoke to WIRED about how I use AI this week btw. I think LLMs can be incredible! I have gotten so much use out of them for research, sorting/analyzing data, optimizing content. I love Claude Code it's truly the best product I've ever used wired.com/story/tech-rep…

@Science_FTW_ @TaylorLorenz @pot8um I’m glad it was clear to you, it isn’t for everyone, especially because some people find exploring system quirks to be fascinating. You do understand my point right? That you can still report on a thing, expose it, etc. without actively, repeatedly using it for things like this?

@Dissonant_Sea @TaylorLorenz @pot8um The sarcasm was very clear in this post. She's clearly complaining about the systems sucking. In the case of AI, yes it's good people with large platforms expose how shitty AI is to counter the evangelists.

@ThisIsNotUmnia @TaylorLorenz @pot8um These harms and AI’s flaws aren’t underreported—they’ve already been made clear. So here, it ends up seeming like someone who’s using their position as a reporter to give themselves cover for their personal enjoyment.

@Science_FTW_ @TaylorLorenz @pot8um Sarcasm often doesn’t translate vis text, but even with that, it’s still problematic. Do you also believe that in order to understand/report on anything that perpetuates harm, that you must yourself engage in doing the harm?

@Dissonant_Sea @TaylorLorenz @pot8um "I love this system" is clearly sarcasm. I don't know how you didn't pick up on it. She's laying it on very thick. To study the negative aspects of something, you need to interact with it. Is she just supposed to just make things up? Someone has to do the work.
