With the first season of Pokemon champions ending and my first month of competitive VGC I think I somehow got worse than when I started. Pokemon is a hard game. I have so many thoughts but that a tweet can’t do justice but Its probably going to be a bit until I stream it again. Unfortunately unless you’re running hard meta or copying a youtuber team you kinda just get bombarded with “this team sucks because” rhetoric, even if it’s likely my own misplay or knowledge gap. Anyways I’m going to keep playing! Just in my own time.

Not the screenshot 😂😂😂 You’d likely be shocked to know I played VGC for 2 years before dropping it in 2016. Trying to get back into it has felt like a very VERY Uphill battle because the game’s not easy to re-learn, simply asking how others deal with thise challenges is a reasonable thing to ask. Stop being condescending, it’s not a good look.

Yugioh players playing VGC and wondering why it isn’t assembling a little IKEA combo engine that comes with prepackaged ways to force the same game plan every match. “Wait, you mean pros are skillfully mitigating RNG and playing around variable battle conditions???” 🤣

@DistantCoder The real secret is that managing the RNG in Pokemon is a huge part of the skill - it’s definitely difficult and you’ll still lose games to bad RNG sometimes, but you can build your teams in a way and play in a way to minimize the odds of it happening

Ok so I've been playing Pokémon champions very actively for about a week now and I have a genuine question to ask regular VGC players. How on earth do y'all deal with the CRAZY amount of RNG in this game? Feels like every 2-3 games are decided by a flinch or a crit, it's unreal.

@Happy_Phanpy Appreciate it. It just feels super frustrating when I can get a 10 game winstreak, multiple 5+ game winstreaks, climb to like top 2000 and then suddenly lose 10-15 in a row. Like at that point I find it hard to believe I just stopped playing well, it feels very odd

@DistantCoder You're a great gamer, and I dont want any of this to sound like I'm talking down to you. Youll break this slump easy. But VGC has an insane skill curve, and I wish you the best in scaling the mountain!

@Shambles1P @sorrytotweet @windupheroGO @Stalruth had a loss today where I was 2v1 into a mega dactyl, he needs to rock slide me 3x to kill one of my mons and 2x for the other. He rock slides, double flinches, rock slides, kills one & flinches the other, then rock slides and wins. No one can convince me that's skill or avoidable

@DistantCoder @sorrytotweet @windupheroGO @Stalruth 1/3 of the time rock slide is used it’ll flinch, chances are they’ve used it at least twice before your “unlucky” flinch happens but I get what you’re saying, it’s happening at an inopportune moment which feels like shit

@IchhabkeinAuto yeah, Bo3 open team sheet actually sounds like a godsend. Genuinely interested in going to a Regional to experience that, because closed team sheet Bo1 like an RNGfest

@DistantCoder Official tournaments are Bo3 open team sheet so that takes already lot of randomness out of the game. You also try to calculate the worst case and try educated risk/reward balancing. If you watch some top players they will always be aware of the worst case and play accordingly.

@sorrytotweet @windupheroGO @Stalruth ???????????????????????????????????????????????????? "I have gotten to a respectable rank and recognize that a lot of the wins I had to fight really hard for and most of my losses have gotten out of my control due to a luck based element" is not arrogant at all LMAOOOO

@Arrowthrowaway I don't think i'll get used to it. I think anything "closed team sheet" is genuinely a worse gaming experience than I've ever experienced with any other game I've ever played. Too many variables on top of the RNG, it's unmanageable as a new player.

@DistantCoder You'll get used to it, but this regulation in particular is actual hell for rng. I feel like this is kind of a thing with low powered formats, it feels really swingy, especially now that half of the good mons run rock slide, and the moves that don't flinch can miss lmao

@Deingel23 It is night and day with yugioh. You can go in with a gameplan of "if I get handtrapped here or there my play is X or Y", you can play perfectly and get fucked on by rng, it's completely miserable

@DistantCoder 1. It's part of the game. It's not much different from Yugioh wherein your opponent draws the out or just has the right amount of Hand Traps 2. The format right now is very low-powered, so RNG can dictate a lot of the games.

@DistantCoder @Stalruth Take flinches for example, if you are getting flinched, you are being outsped. How could you have led to get better speed control? Could you change your team to fit wide guard? Could you have played in a way where the risk of a flinch mattered less?

@Stalruth Idk man, I'd believe this if I didn't go 10 games in a row on ranked losing to flinch, then crit, then raw hurricane outside of rain hitting and confusing into me hitting myself twice and so on, it's legit every fucking game like this. Miserable skill-less experience
