Michigan House Speaker Matt Hall was met with cries of “shame” after he ripped back $645 million in already-approved funding for programs that support pregnant women, babies, kids with cancer, veterans, education, and local community projects. These weren’t bloated budgets or wasteful spending. Hall’s cuts hit a nonprofit that provides wigs to children undergoing cancer treatment and an organization that supports child survivors of sexual assault. House Speaker Matt Hall is calling this responsibility. It’s cruelty dressed up as governance. And even inside the GOP, the move is raising alarms. Rep. Jon Bumstead (R-Muskegon) said the state should stand by the promises it already made in the budget. When people yelled “shame,” they weren’t heckling — they were calling out a betrayal.

Bernie Sanders just put Michigan’s Eboni Taylor on the national map. As part of a major downballot endorsement rollout, Sanders named Taylor in the race for State Senate District 3, joining 60 other state and local candidates across the country who are running to bring working-class politics back to government.

If Democratic leadership attempts to impose Haley Stevens on the electorate, they should be prepared for a serious enthusiasm problem that could depress turnout well beyond one election cycle. The issue is not merely messaging. It is credibility and a lack of meaningful policy. No amount of outside spending can manufacture trust or convince voters that a candidate offers them any political vision when the base already feels ignored.

NOTUS: Haley Stevens’ Supporters Are Pressuring Democrats to Pick a Side Rep. Haley Stevens’ supporters are pressuring Democratic leaders to back the congresswoman in Michigan’s three-way Senate primary, arguing she’s the only option for the party to avoid nominating progressive favorite Abdul El-Sayed and meeting electoral disaster. #MichiganSenate notus.org/2026-election/…

Look at that: even the moderate think tank crowd is now discovering that “people should be able to see a doctor without going broke” is good politics. Progressives called it Medicare for All for years, but apparently it only counts as a “new idea” once the consultants feel the heat and rename one piece of it.

Scoop: Democratic think tank @SearchlightInst is pushing the party to embrace a new idea: Free primary care for all Americans. The group wants Dems to rethink their approach to health care and break out of the M4A vs ACA rut. They’re unimpressed with CAP’s proposal and warn that Dems need to have a vision beyond opposing Trump and restoring expired subsidies. “This is still our best issue, but we have not been on offense in a way that’s capturing people’s imaginations and getting them excited,” says @AJentleson. “We don’t need to be on defense or just advocating for incremental reforms.” Story w/ @BerkeleyJr: nbcnews.com/politics/polit…

If you see a helicopter towing one of these over your neighborhood, bad news: your town is getting a data center. They’re running airborne electromagnetic surveys to map groundwater in the area. TRANSLATION: figuring out how much water they can divert before people notice.

A Michigan judge decided Thursday morning that Republican candidate for governor John James will have to stop, at least for now, using a campaign logo that might indicate to voters that he's the incumbent. detroitnews.com/story/news/pol…

New billboards are going up in the race for Helena Scott’s state House seat, a sign that progressive challengers are turning corporate money into a front-and-center campaign issue. Chris Gilmer-Hill is running on affordability and getting corporate cash out of Lansing, and his campaign is now taking that message directly into the district. It’s part of a bigger trend in Michigan politics: incumbents who took money from DTE and other corporate interests are starting to face challengers who are making that record impossible to ignore.

BREAKING: Rep. Ro Khanna just endorsed William Lawrence @WeWill2026 in Michigan’s 7th Congressional District. That’s a big deal. Khanna is the second sitting member of Congress to back Lawrence, who now has 44 endorsements and leads the MI-07 primary in congressional and local elected support. ICY didn't know, Lawrence is one of the co- founders of the Sunrise movement and a local affordable housing activist.

Apparently @MikeRogersForMI has ads playing on You Tube that appear at the end of some of our pod content. Mike... really money well spent. We shit all over you on our last episode and then your ad popped up. Great placement! And thanks! Sorry guys, nothing we can do about it. We don't get to pick the ads.

BREAKING: $20 MILLION in TV ads are coming this fall targeting Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan’s U.S. Senate race. And that’s just TV. This does not include the digital or mail spending still to come, which we’re told will be massive. Michigan is about to be one of the most expensive and closely watched Senate battlegrounds in the country, and Rogers is already in the crosshairs.
