I think it’s hard for the criminal justice system to deal with these kinds of cases. It’s not unusual for elderly drivers to mix up the gas pedal and the brake pedal. If you have lived long enough, you will have seen these stories in the news. The person is trying to slow down and they don’t understand why their pressing on the pedal isn’t working—so they stomp harder. But it’s not the brakes, it’s the gas pedal.

A driver who killed a family of four, including two babies, at a San Francisco bus stop was sentenced to probation. Mary Fong Lau (seen here walking through the courthouse today) dodged jail and prison time. Lau, 80, was speeding when her Mercedes SUV plowed into a West Portal bus stop in 2024, investigators said. A family was waiting to catch the bus for a trip to the zoo. The crash killed Diego Cardoso de Oliveira, his wife, Matilde Pinto, and their two babies.
