Today's commentary: There’s a booking photo of Ginny from 2005. Hollowed-out face, vacant eyes, 94 pounds on a 5-foot-9-inch frame. Set it next to her 2021 photo, cap and gown, a UW graduate and a Truman Scholar, and you’re looking at the same woman with nearly 30 years of addiction, jail, and prison in between. She’ll tell you what closed that gap, and she doesn’t say it gently. “Don’t tell me that prison doesn’t save lives,” she said. “My image was not improving with a compassionate approach.” That comes from someone who lived the compassionate approach all the way down to 94 pounds. What finally turned it, in her own telling, was “the pause.” Felony charges pulled her off the street, the cycle stopped, and for the first time something else had room to grow.

OPINION: Then the tournament ended. The tourists left. The cameras left. Seattle just proved it can clean up its most visible blocks. So what happened to the people who used to be there? mynorthwest.com/kiro-opinion/a…
