Heavy Rain Triggers D+adly Landslide, K+lls Four Children and One Adult in Cross River
Five people, including four children, have been k+lled after a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall struck Ikot Anwatim Community in Calabar Municipality, Cross River State.
In a viral video, the bereaved parents of the four d+ad children noted that they lost their children and their house totally to the landslide.
The tragic incident also left two others, an adult and a child, inj¥red. They were rescued and are receiving treatment in hospital.
Following the disaster, the Cross River State Emergency Management Agency (CR-SEMA), led by its Director General, Mr Efa Nyong, carried out an emergency assessment on Saturday alongside officials of the Nigerian Red Cross Society.
The team inspected the affected area, met with bereaved families and assessed the extent of the d@mage caused by the landslide.
Speaking during the visit, Nyong described the d+aths, particularly those of the children, as heartbreaking and conveyed the condolences of the Cross River State Government to the affected families.
He assured residents that the government would work with relevant agencies and humanitarian partners to provide relief and support to victims.
Nyong said the assessment would help document the impact of the disaster and guide humanitarian assistance as well as long-term measures to reduce future risks.
He also urged residents in landslide and erosion-prone communities to remain vigilant, report warning signs such as ground cracks or soil movement, and comply with evacuation directives when issued.
CR-SEMA recommended immediate humanitarian support for affected households, continued medical care for the inj¥red, a geotechnical survey to assess the stability of the area, intensified public awareness on landslide risks, and the possible relocation of residents living in high-risk communities to prevent similar tragedies.
