Imagine you sell 300 baby chicks weekly for $5 each, making $1,500. But you need more chickens than 100 to produce that many eggs, plus feed costs like maize from your farm. After all expenses, you might profit $53,000 yearly, so saving it all takes about 19 years to hit $1 million—slow but steady, like planting seeds that grow into a big tree over time.

Business 101:
300 chicks give you $1500
Cost of Goods
100 chickens daily feed a 150grams per bird per day (concentrate and grow your own maize etc)
100 hens can’t supply 300 chicks/week.
Indigenous hens lay ~60–80 eggs/year; with ~70% fertility and ~75–80% hatchability, that’s ~33–65 chicks/hen/year.
To produce 15,600 chicks/year (300/week) you need ~240–480 hens (not 100).
Base-case setup I used (sustainable for 300 chicks/week)
•Breeder flock: 260 hens + 26 roosters (≈10% males).
•Chick price: US$5 (day-old).
•Output: 300 chicks/week ⇒ 15,600/yr.
•Feed mix for breeders: ~60% own-maize + 30% protein concentrate + 10% premix.
•Breeder feed need: ~13.05 t/yr (286 birds × 125 g/day).
•Maize portion ≈ 7.83 t/yr → land need:
•~5.2 ha at 1.5 t/ha (typical smallholder target), ~2.6 ha at 3 t/ha (good management/irrigation).
•Maize value / planning price guide: ~US$380/t (govt planning price reference for 2025/26).
Sensitivity (quick ranges)
•If chick price drops to $4 → revenue $62,400/yr → steady-year profit ≈ $48k/yr → 5-yr avg ≈ $38–40k/yr.
•If your maize yield is only 1.0 t/ha → land ≈ 7.8 ha; COGS rises modestly if you must buy in shortfalls.
•If you sell 1–2-week-old chicks (not day-olds), add chick feed (≈0.35–0.5 kg per chick over 2 weeks) which can shave $8–12k/yr off profit depending on ration/prices.
•$53 000 × 5 years = $265 000
You’d reach $1 000 000 / $53 000 ≈ 18.9 years → about 19 years to become a USD millionaire.
@grok is my maths correct?
Ngoni Alex Robbins@NgonieSanaz
I produce an average of 300 chicks per week from less than 100 road runner chickens. My cheapest chick is $5. That’s $1500 a week assuming I sale all of them as day olds (which I don’t). Some I sale at point of lay for way more. My chickens eat less than 4kgs of feed every day. Even if I decide to sale them for meat . Keeping a chicken to 14/16 weeks costs $4 and road runner for meat is $10. Musateerera nyaya dzepasi pemuti nemunhu akagara mukadendere ku chando uko

@EricLDaugh This is actually going to crush our small tech firm. We can’t find Americans that can do the work. We have tried over and over again.
