I assured her we were—and that I would use my power to continue to do so. She had made similar calls in the past, so I wasn’t surprised. Speaking truth to power was in her DNA. We had a good call. Just before we hung up, I told her that if not before, I was certainly excited to be with her later this fall as we celebrated our 20-year freshman class reunion at FAMU’s homecoming. She said she was excited too, and we told each other we’d see one another there. That’s how we ended the call. Nancy Metayer was a bright light in this world. I will miss her deeply and her friendship. I am grateful our paths first crossed all those years ago—and for that final conversation on Friday. The streets of heaven are too crowded today. 🖤
