I’m so excited to finally share this: I’m writing a book. It’s about Oakland—its rise as a great American sports town, its fall to the billionaires who abandoned it, and, most of all, the fans and activists and founders who fought to hold onto this aspect of the city’s history, identity and soul. I aim to get it all: what happened, how it happened, and why it matters not just to A’s, Raiders, Warriors, Roots and Ballers fans, but sports fans (and taxpayers) everywhere. I’ve been working on this for a long time already, and though there’s still a long way to go, I’m so excited for you all to read it. Let’s Go, Oakland. I hope it does you justice ⚾️ cc @OaklandBallers @oaklandrootssc @Oakland68s @LastDiveBar @UnivNebPress

This is where we are with sports subsidies, 40 years in: Even being allowed to ask that the public get anything in return for their gift of tax money to a billionaire owner is seen in some circles as tantamount to running your team out of town on a rail. fieldofschemes.com/2026/05/12/241…

My latest: The Seahawks will likely fetch a record price for an NFL franchise, but the market is surprisingly "soft," per league insiders and those involved in the process. espn.com/nfl/story/_/id…

This is so bad for the NBA. Cheap owners should not own pro sports teams in this country. Should be all ballmers and Cohens. Guys who spend on players and stadiums and see it as it should be: a cool thing they spend money on.
Ramona Shelburne@ramonashelburne

Sources told ESPN that Splitter was given a raise from his assistant coaching salary and discussed a longer-term contract during the season. The salary presented to him to continue on as head coach was far below a standard NBA head coaching salary, and further discussion was tabled until after the season, sources said.

"Asked if there was anything else Fisher could have done to keep the team in Oakland, Wolff said litigation was the only remaining choice..." Or, you know, he could have just built at the Coliseum site... which Fisher already owned half of... where Wolff had wanted to build initially... and where construction on a new stadium would have already been finished. But yeah that would have been crazy. nytimes.com/athletic/72175…

it is imperative that we give MLB owners a salary cap. without it, they simply would not be able to continue selling their baseball teams for record-breaking billions in profit. please ignore the tweet below this

Great piece. As someone who fell in love w football largely BECAUSE of Gruden's Raiders, ~ 1998-2001—and then fell out of love w/ the Raiders after they left Oakland for LV, in other words largely because of Mark Davis—this was both shocking and not. Sometimes things are exactly as they seem.

It wasn't that long ago the Raiders hired a head coach straight from TV, then did the same at GM. The result: 4 years of chaos. Inside Jon Gruden's second run with the Raiders from those inside the building — and why they're still trying to get it right: nytimes.com/athletic/71524…
