@rderekp Oh good thought! I was introducing a 1st time player in this instance, but in the future I can always just give a character sheet to a player and say "here's an extra for this fight" that's cool!

@DnDBones i usually would make that "dm pc" much lower level so as to not steal the show. i also try to make it snappy.

@Darth_Aegon Totally get ya! I've been dming for almost 30 years and the "clunkiness" I ran into was just having the DM PC and the NPCs have efficient dialogue. But as the dungeon progressed I found ways around it!

@DnDBones Hello there. I've been a DM since the 1980s. Most games I've run I've had a DM PC. Full character sheet, personality, dreams, fears, and goals. It's always been a good choice, I utilize them to fill in gaps in the group, and so I can have deeper interactions with the party

@DnDBones I do but lightly if I have a low player party like 1-2 I will run usually a animal companion like a Corgi that has the full stats and abilities of a cleric to round our the party then RP them as lovable boofs that just follow the other PCs around or give hints Scooby Doo esc.

@DnDBones I have one, but specifically use it for one shots, and an optional NPC the players can take with them as a support character. Used her to save the party from a TPK (it was the first fight of the session) as they ran headfirst into a trap.

@80sVillain I was introducing my GF to it for the first time but we couldn't find more people to play with, but I've been a dm for so long I decided I'd give her a 1st level rogue to travel with. A rogue is a good DM PC cuz they can just vanish when needed.

@DnDBones I do it pretty regularly. I started it to make sure that gaps were filled in party structures. It's mostly fine, you just have to try and make sure you're checking your biases and also not giving the game away with PC's ideas or contributions

@Ms_Will_o_Witch I've been DMing for almost 30 years so it's super easy (annoying for the Players) for me to switch from DM mode where I know everything, to Player mode where I know nothing. It just makes dialogue hard!

@DnDBones I usually do this because we don’t have enough players for a full party. It’s just like running an NPC just with more responsibility. Separating your DM knowledge from the character is the main thing people seem to have trouble with when doing this

@DnDBones I actually had to do this for my current campaign because my party of 6 decided to go with no cleric and 4 of them are crazy squishy. Its annoying, but i dont have him participate in ANYTHING other than light combat and i make sure he draws the same aggro as normal
