You uploaded your tax PDF to a "free" PDF compressor. That file now lives on someone else's server. For how long? Who has access? Used to train what? Most "free" online tools are surveillance tools in disguise. 🧵 1/10 #Privacy #IndieHackers #BuildInPublic #WebDev

In a rare and remarkable case, a baby boy named Matheus Gabriel was born in Brazil clutching the intrauterine device (IUD) that was meant to prevent his conception. The delivery took place at Hospital Sagrado Coração de Jesus in Nerópolis, Goiás. His mother had been using the IUD as contraception, but it failed to prevent the pregnancy. When the baby was born, doctors were stunned to see him tightly gripping the small T-shaped device in his tiny hand. While IUDs are among the most effective forms of birth control, experts note that no contraceptive method is 100% foolproof. In extremely rare cases, pregnancies can still occur if the device shifts or is expelled unnoticed. Both mother and baby were reported to be healthy following the delivery. Photos of the unusual moment quickly went viral online, sparking widespread amazement and conversations about the limits of contraception and the unpredictability of life.

Meta is preparing to lay off about 8,000 workers, which is 10% of its total worldwide staff, with cuts starting around May 20. This comes despite a strong first quarter where revenue hit $56.31 billion, up 33% from last year. Leaders say the job cuts are needed to fund huge new spending on AI data centers, as the company now plans to spend between $125 billion and $145 billion this year on those projects. Workers at Meta are very unhappy, with one person telling reporters that everyone is unhappy except the top bosses. Some staff even hope to get picked for the layoffs so they can receive 16 weeks of pay plus 18 months of health coverage. New tracking software on US work laptops is adding to the bad mood because it monitors mouse movements, clicks, and takes screenshots from their emails and chats to train AI, with no way to turn it off.

California lawmakers took a big step for video game players on May 14, 2026. A group in the state Assembly voted to advance bill AB 1921, meaning the full Assembly will now vote on it soon. The bill, named the Protect Our Games Act, was introduced by Assemblymember Chris Ward. It sets clear rules for video game companies that sell games connected to online servers. If it becomes law, it would apply only to new games sold after January 1, 2027. >Before shutting down servers, companies must notify players at least 60 days in advance. >They must then provide one of three options: -an offline version playable forever -a free patch allowing play without the company’s servers -or a full refund. Many companies currently shut down servers and make paid games unplayable. This bill aims to stop that. The Stop Killing Games campaign supported the bill, while the Entertainment Software Association opposed it, arguing the rules would hurt new game development. The opposition failed in the committee vote.

Microsoft has added a new feature to Copilot in the Edge browser so the AI can read information from all your open tabs at the same time You can ask Copilot to check everything in your open tabs and it can make a short summary of all the pages. It can also compare options like products, hotels or travel choices and help you make a plan or pick the best one. For example, when you open many recipe pages Copilot can change the amounts for your guests and create a cooking plan with a shopping list. The feature is optional so you must turn it on and allow tab access, but you can turn it off anytime in Edge settings. Microsoft says they keep your information private based on its rules.

@sciencegirl Maybe the strangest part is not parallel universes, but how limited our intuition is about reality. Quantum physics keeps reminding us that nature does not care what feels normal to humans.

An Oxford physicist says the universe may be far stranger than we imagine, with countless alternate versions of you potentially existing across parallel realities. The idea is linked to the “Many-Worlds Interpretation” of quantum mechanics, a theory suggesting that every quantum event could cause reality to branch into multiple possible outcomes instead of producing just one result. In simple terms, every decision or interaction at the quantum level may create separate versions of reality where different outcomes unfold. Somewhere in another branch of the universe, another version of you may have made different choices, followed another career, or lived an entirely different life. Oxford physicist Vlatko Vedral recently explained that one of the biggest misunderstandings in quantum physics involves the observer effect. Many people believe human consciousness somehow creates reality, but physicists say quantum systems change whenever they interact with anything, not only when a person observes them. For instance, if a photon strikes a pair of sunglasses, the interaction itself determines whether the light passes through or bounces away. In some interpretations of quantum theory, both possibilities may continue to exist in separate branches of reality. Scientists have not proven that parallel universes exist, and the Many-Worlds Interpretation remains one of several competing explanations for quantum mechanics. Researchers still debate which interpretation best reflects the true nature of reality. What scientists do know is that quantum particles can behave in extremely strange ways. Experiments repeatedly show that particles can exist in multiple possible states simultaneously until an interaction forces a measurable outcome, a phenomenon confirmed in laboratories for decades.

Amazon Game Studios has shut down Project Trident and laid off the entire team in San Diego. The game started as a team adventure like Shadow of the Colossus, with giant monster fights, grappling hooks, and flying mounts. In mid-2024 Amazon told all teams to add AI tools as much as possible, so the team quickly changed it into a funny Nordic action game where players could speak or type commands to AI characters The main art, music, story, and gameplay were all made by people, while AI was only used for talking to the characters. The team made many fast changes and built a good test version, but in October 2025 Amazon still laid off the full team during big company cuts and canceled the project because the company is now making fewer large games.

This trend is becoming impossible to ignore now. More global companies are building GCCs in India instead of relying heavily on traditional IT services firms. They want direct access to talent, faster execution, and tighter integration with core product teams. For employees too, GCCs usually mean better pay, better work culture, stronger ownership, and more meaningful product work. A lot of service based companies spent years squeezing both clients and employees, charging clients premium rates while underpaying engineers and overworking them. Now companies increasingly want to cut out the middle layer.

One of the most nutrient-dense foods on Earth comes from an unexpected source, a species of cockroach. The Pacific beetle cockroach (Diploptera punctata) is unique among insects because it gives birth to live young and nourishes them with a protein-rich “milk” that crystallizes inside the embryos’ stomachs. These microscopic crystals contain a remarkable balance of fats, sugars, and proteins, including all nine essential amino acids. According to researchers, this cockroach milk is approximately three times more nutritious than human breast milk by weight. It functions as a complete, slow-release energy source specifically designed to support rapid embryonic growth. While the discovery highlights an extraordinary feat of evolutionary engineering, cockroach milk is unlikely to become a commercial superfood anytime soon. Producing even small amounts would require harvesting thousands of insects, making it highly impractical. Additionally, there is currently no clinical research demonstrating health benefits for humans. Instead, the finding stands as a fascinating example of nature’s ingenuity — showing how one of the world’s most reviled insects evolved a highly efficient biological superfood to ensure the survival of its offspring.

Stardew Valley creator ConcernedApe has said he will not add cheating or affair options to the game. He says they are too serious and do not fit the fun, relaxing feel, even though he once discussed what might happen if you cheated, such as the town turning against you or causing family problems. He is also unlikely to add breakups for the couples already in the game because it would require too many changes to the stories and conversations. He is currently working on his next game, Haunted Chocolatier.

Amazon Game Studios has cancelled its Lord of the Rings MMO. Announced in May 2023 in partnership with Embracer, the project was still in very early pre-production. The decision follows Amazon’s major layoffs last October, which scaled back several first-party AAA and MMO. The studio says it continues exploring a new game experience set in Tolkien’s Middle-earth.

A small Japanese game maker called Mousou no Mayu cannot receive money from Steam for the all-ages version of their game Hustle Battle Card Gamers. The bank Daishi Hokuetsu Bank stopped payments from other countries after reviewing the anime-style pictures and claiming some characters look like children, even though the game has no adult content. The bank also warned it may block funds from Japanese sites like DLsite and FANZA but gave the game maker a short grace period, so the maker now plans to change banks. This is happening more often with Japanese banks and small game makers as banks block payments based on their own views of game content.
