Grading is communication.
When we average grades over time, valuing early attempts evenly with later attempts, we communicate that where you start will control how successful you can be later.
I can't think of a worse message for education to give to students.

@sage_stage One thing that they taught us in the "kids deserve it" training was to ask the four questions: what are you doing, what are you /supposed/ to be doing, do answers one and two match, what (if anything) needs to change? It def helps with self awareness. Ask whole class before one.

Anyone have a good strategy for working with a kid who thinks you are always singling him out for behavior issues? Especially if you are speaking to multiple kids and not just him, but also if he might actually be the most disruptive student in the class.

@MattRKay @tracyrenee70 @DeeSTEM_Teach Definitely more inclusive language! With the older kids, I've made the point of telling them that I'm calling THEM friends (of each other), not trying to make them my friends by calling them that. Language IS important, but actions/respect (or lack thereof) is what blurs lines.

@tracyrenee70 @T_F_Berger @DeeSTEM_Teach They understand that the teacher makes plans and the kids follow them, and that the teacher wants to keep kids safe and the kids make safe choices too - and none of that interferes with their working definition of friendship. It's around 3rd grade when they start redefining that.

@tracyrenee70 @T_F_Berger @DeeSTEM_Teach It's def a 'thing' in ECE. I am the teacher; you are the students; we are friends here. Friends help and encourage each other, look out for best interests, treat each other kindly, and have fun together. In early childhood, the definition of friend and teacher is very similar.

Instead of admin doing walkthroughs, they could do "tag outs."
They take over your class so that you can walkthrough another teacher's class.
Admin learns about your class, how they learn, classroom behavior & relationships.
Teachers learn new ideas for lessons & management.

My first year, the AP came in and yelled at my whole class (in front of me), telling them that the USA might be democratic, but I was dictator in my class and they needed to shape up and show me my "due" respect. I prefer your AP's approach.

@SustainTeaching I imagine that most cases come when the teacher feels most defensive, rather than supported. If the coaches come in with a "wow, what a great idea - I wonder how we can make it even better" point of view, reticent learners will be much happier to be coached.

And so we must ask ourselves: why are teachers not consenting to being coached? Why are they disengaged from professional learning? What barriers to professional learning are our systems creating?
Address those first and I think youโll see that more teachers will seek coaching.

Crossing guard = music teacher (at least, in my case). I sent this home on @Seesaw after multiple parents were surprised to learn that I was the music teacher - they thought I was just the crossing guard volunteer. Nope! I rush outside after classes each day to smile and wave! โบ๏ธ
