Now that’s cool‼️ the Pamir Plateau, where the sheer vastness and raw beauty can feel as oppressive as a storm rolling across the Outback, yet as awe-inspiring as a rare critter sighting‼️ The Pamir Plateau, often dubbed the "Roof of the World," stretches across Tajikistan, Afghanistan, China, and Kyrgyzstan, with peaks soaring so high you'd think they were touching the stars. This is no ordinary place; it's a high-altitude desert where the air is thin, the silence is deafening, and the landscape is as stark as the moon's surface. The oppressive feeling comes from the sheer isolation and the overwhelming scale of it all - you're surrounded by towering mountains and endless plateaus that make you feel like a tiny speck in nature's grand design. The plateau's harsh climate, with its biting cold and relentless winds, adds to the sense of foreboding. It's a place where the elements rule, and human presence feels almost like an intrusion. The sparse vegetation and the rocky, barren terrain amplify this, making every step feel like a battle against the environment. Posts on X often highlight this eerie sensation, with travelers noting how the vastness can be both beautiful and intimidating, like staring into the abyss. But it's not just the physical environment; the cultural and historical weight of the Pamirs adds another layer. This is a land where ancient trade routes like the Silk Road once thrived, yet today, it's one of the most remote places on Earth. The few people who live here, often in small, isolated villages, embody a resilience that's both humbling and a bit daunting, reminding you of humanity's struggle against nature's might. The oppressive feeling is also tied to the altitude - averaging around 3,500 to 4,500 meters above sea level, it can leave you gasping for breath, both literally and figuratively. The low oxygen levels can mess with your head, making the already surreal landscape feel even more alien, as if you've stepped onto another planet. Yet, amidst this, there's a strange beauty. The Pamir Plateau is home to stunning vistas, with peaks like Ismoil Somoni (7,495 meters) and vast, glacier-fed lakes like Zorkul. The starkness is punctuated by moments of vibrant life - yaks grazing, rare Marco Polo sheep, and the occasional snow leopard prowling in the shadows. It's a place where nature's extremes are on full display, and that oppressiveness is part of its allure, drawing adventurers who crave the raw, unfiltered edge of the wild. while the Pamir Plateau might weigh heavy on your soul with its vast, unyielding presence, it's also a reminder of how magnificent and humbling our planet can be. This place is truly somewhere to test your spirit and marvel at the world's wonders!

Does the brain change during pregnancy? You bet it does. How about doing 26 MRI scans on a single person pre-conception to 2 years post-partum. WOW! Laura Pritschet and colleagues nailed it with their new paper in @NatureNeuro. Key Points: - The authors point out that pregnancy is a period of profound hormonal and physiological changes. - The authors did something incredible by mapping neuroanatomical changes in an individual from preconception through two years postpartum. - Boom! There were pronounced decreases in gray matter volume and cortical thickness. - There were increases in white matter microstructural integrity, ventricle volume and cerebrospinal fluid. - There were few regions untouched by the 'transition to motherhood.' My take: This study shows us how a single brain in a single person can be a powerful resource when scanned serially over time. This method is hard to pull off, however what it has the potential to teach us about neuroscience is mind-blowing. Though this paper is only a single subject, the data provides a comprehensive map of the human brain across gestation. It will be interesting to add to the dataset, so we can understand changes across multiple persons and multiple conditions. The convergence of evidence is revealing that pregnancy as associated with dramatic neuroplasticity. How about a shout out to this 38-year-old woman who underwent 26 MRI scans along with blood draws from 3 weeks preconception through 2 years postpartum! nature.com/articles/s4159… #pregnancy #brain @ndosenbach @andreashorn_ @EMiddlebrooksMD
