Ultra Processed Food, and the system that produces it, has overtaken tobacco in terms of health and economic harms, and is also the leading cause of plastic pollution, loss of biodiversity and deforestation, and the second leading cause of emissions. This week @TheLancet published a landmark three-part series on the science, policy and politics of #UPF. thelancet.com/series-do/ultr…

“This bill has teeth,” Frerick said. “This is talk meets substance for the first time.” “From a political standpoint, this is one of the best ways [for Democrats] to outflank Republicans right now,” Frerick added.

You may have noticed a similarity between baby snacks and junky cheesy puffs. It's not accidental - these are ‘bite and dissolve’ foods. This incredible piece by @KitchenBee revelaes the truth behind these and other toddler foods but the really astounding thing is that many NHS trusts around the U.K. are actively suggesting these ultra-processed products for young children. If you have kids or feed kids I cannot recommend this piece strongly enough. open.substack.com/pub/kitchenbee…

@DoctorChrisVT listening to U-PP audio book again. Checked the cupboards. I can’t believe that, for years, I have been putting these in my children’s lunch boxes. @AldiUK display them alongside the baby ‘fruit’ snacks, when they are, in fact, sweets.

You aren’t wrong Patrick. But the challenge is that few supplements have actually been tested to assure the ingredients on the label match what is actually in the supplements you ingest. Be careful
Patrick Collison@patrickc

I'm lucky enough to have a great doctor and access to excellent Bay Area medical care. I've taken lots of standard screening tests over the years and have tried lots of "health tech" devices and tools. With all this said, by far the most useful preventative medical advice that I've ever received has come from unleashing coding agents on my genome, having them investigate my specific mutations, and having them recommend specific follow-on tests and treatments. Population averages are population averages, but we ourselves are not averages. For example, it turns out that I probably have a 30x(!) higher-than-average predisposition to melanoma. Fortunately, there are both specific supplements that help counteract the particular mutations I have, and of course I can significantly dial up my screening frequency. So, this is very useful to know. I don't know exactly how much the analysis cost, but probably less than $100. Sequencing my genome cost a few hundred dollars. (One often sees papers and articles claiming that models aren't very good at medical reasoning. These analyses are usually based on employing several-year-old models, which is a kind of ludicrous malpractice. It is true that you still have to carefully monitor the agents' reasoning, and they do on occasion jump to conclusions or skip steps, requiring some nudging and re-steering. But, overall, they are almost literally infinitely better for this kind of work than what one can otherwise obtain today.) There are still lots of questions about how this will diffuse and get adopted, but it seems very clear that medical practice is about to improve enormously. Exciting times!

Hey- my paperback is out tomorrow! Publishing a book, finishing a research project or article- it can all feel anticlimactic. Years of work, it comes out and then... I'm celebrating with a cup of tea and walk. penguin.co.uk/books/458539/h…

Most Nigerians think they are drinking milk. They are drinking Fat-Filled Milk Powder (FFMP). In the EU, FFMP can’t be sold as milk, it must be labelled as a milk ingredient, not a dairy product. Here, it’s “milk”. Nigerians are eating what others aren’t allowed to call food.

Recent military escalation across the Middle East is putting millions of children in danger, especially in Iran and Lebanon and stretched resources in neighbouring countries (Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan) are going to come under even greater pressure. Children, as always, will bear the heaviest burden. Please donate to @UNICEF today to protect children in the Middle East and worldwide. unicef.org.uk/donate/childre…
