Hello new followers! I am a psychologist in the great state of Ohio. I learned to be a therapist treating Vietnam Veterans. My dissertation is on positive change after trauma. My clients are Veterans, police officers, emergency care workers, and first-responders. And I make memes

Friends, I'm opening a spiritual center in Boulder! It's called Nameless Mountain, and it's focused on spiritual maturity rather than enlightenment. We're trying to raise $50,000 to cover this year's expenses. Please help build this with us by donating or becoming a member: givebutter.com/nameless-mount…

When I was in grad school a professor said anyone in academia can name five people in their field they think is a complete idiot. Now that I’ve been in the psychology field for a while, I want to e-mail him: “Only five?!”

I once told Steven Hayes that I loved his 2001 book on Relational Frame Theory and he said “that book is a cure for insomnia!”

@eyebaws1 Maybe in private healthcare it is closer to assisted suicide than state execution, but in Canada healthcare funding is decided by the government.

@DoctorPerin The proper name for assisted suicide is actually just assisted suicide.

In propaganda and persuasion theory, changing the name or label of something to make it sound more appealing is called “Glittering Generalities.” An example is calling execution “assisted suicide”

I'm about 15 minutes in to @PierrePoilievre's interview with @joerogan. About 12 minutes in they start talking about MAID, where Poilievre says people "should have the choice". A few minutes later he talks about how his favourite psychologist is Viktor Frankl. Frankl actively opposed assisted-suicide, and knew that seeking to eliminate suffering often ends up eliminating the suffering person. "Every life, in every situation and to the last breath, has a meaning, retains a meaning. This is equally true of the life of a sick person, even the mentally sick. The so-called life not worth living does not exist." - Viktor Frankl

@DoctorPerin I’m saying sexual orientation isn’t an illness. When it was removed from the DSM there wasn’t any hand wringing and cries of “but what do we call it instead?” it was just removed. People suffer. Let’s help them without telling them their personality is disordered

There is a long history of clinical terms being transformed into insults by the general population. I’ve watched several terms change over the years, and not once did they change what those terms described. Language is arbitrarily applied, but it is not arbitrarily applicable.
Jade Stanton@jadethebpdcoach

The BPD label doesn't cause harm. PEOPLE cause harm and use the label as an excuse. I see no evidence to convince me removing/changing the label will solve this problem.

@Keirwales What? Trauma isn’t a sexual orientation. And do you not think people who survive abuse suffer? The impacts of trauma on personality is probably one of the most consistently observed across cultures and generations.

@DoctorPerin We took homosexuality out of the DSM. We didn’t just change the name. We could just as easily stop telling survivors of abuse their personalities are disordered.

@DoctorPerin I don’t think there’s something inherently stigmatizing about BPD label. But I do see how people with the label suffer from the stigma, especially in psych ward & also towards the ones with a more neurotic form of it. It keeps people from getting the help they need, even if they

I remember the movement to rename Borderline Personality Disorder to “Childhood Trauma Disorder” because they thought BPD sounded mean. That was over twenty years ago.

@DoctorPerin From my own perspective, I’m speaking to the label—on the surface—not the background definition. “Borderline Personality” requires one to read a descriptor to make sense of such a vague term. What’s the ‘personality’ component? Is it inclusive of emotion, thoughts, beliefs, etc?

@DoctorPerin One label implies something inherently "wrong" w/ the person (disordered person & unfixable), whereas the other includes implication of external causes, environmental & relational wounding with resulting internal scars (disordered environment -> wounded person & still heal-able).

@DoctorPerin I also find CBT annoying because they want to skip all the rigor and just fix the problem but what if occams razor applies and the most logical and simplest solution is the best one
