@JaneCaro So a six year old is able to accurately decode words and you are concerned? My child was taught with balanced literacy and at 6 only would have been able to guess at the words based on the picture and first letter using 3 cuing system. Your child has a solid scaffold now to grow.

Am feeling a little more concerned about the obsession with phonics. 6 year old grandson read me a card I was sent with a parcel - sounding out the words he did not know. Wow! I was so impressed. Until his mum asked him what he’d just read meant. He had no clue…

"Your son (or daughter) will learn to read when they're ready." That's about the dumbest & most dishonest thing a reading teacher could ever say to a concerned parent. Almost any child will learn to read as soon as a competent teacher can be found to teach him.

Parents If your child brings home a letter like this, you damn well better take matters into your own hands: teach your child, yourself, how to read.
