You live in Europe. Europe, post-1945, was protected by an American security umbrella that allowed it to spend relatively little on defense and redirect those resources toward the social democratic welfare states that produced the quality of life that European citizens rightly value. That security umbrella was not free. It came with American bases on European soil. American nuclear weapons on European soil. American influence over European foreign policy. European support, sometimes enthusiastic, sometimes reluctant, sometimes simply unavoidable, for American actions around the world. The welfare state you live in was, in part, subsidized by the American military so that Europe would remain in the American orbit rather than drifting toward accommodation with the Soviet Union. This doesn't mean your healthcare isn't real or your social protections aren't valuable. It means you should know what they were built on and how the arrangement was maintained and what it cost people who weren't Western Europeans. Knowing that doesn't take anything away from you. It just makes the picture complete.

@nxt888 @We_Are_Toasted I live in Europe. The Postwar Europeans hugely benefited from access to American markets, so I'm not sure where you're going with this.

@thisiswenzel For someone who works 3 months a year, those are actually really good prices. The same is with accommodation. You can find a 4-star stay for 150 euros per night or 2 stars for 250 a night. True, it is silly.

I'm currently in Croatia, and the prices here are all over the fucking place. It's super weird. The best coffee place in this small city charges 2,5€ for a cappuccino (which is fine coming from Germany). Yet somehow their flat white (double shot espresso) costs 5,4€. That's more expensive than in Germany. Then I eat at a regular Italian place. Pizza 9-15€ = fine. Burger (15€). Right across the street, a very similar place, maybe a tad better, but really basically the same kind of restaurant. Bacon burger = 25€. What? At the beach. First place Aperol 6€, next location, like 10m further. 11€. And people will say, you're comparing apples with oranges. Nah bro, I'm not. Trust me. I know my restaurants. I have 15M views on Google Maps reviews (for restaurants). This pricing is completely bonkers. Also, why is ice 3-4€ per scoop? LIKE WHAT? Like I said, the pricing here is all over the place. I have to start asking for prices, because you don't know if it's gonna be cheap, normal, or expensive. Weird.
Lauren Chen@TheLaurenChen

Why are restaurants so expensive in the West? I'm honestly asking. In Asia people eat out almost every day, there are options cheaper than cooking for yourself. But even "street food" is expensive here. I paid $17 for 4 tacos out of a truck from a guy who spoke no English.

Ignorance, the root and stem of all evil
😎😂“If Europe cannot defeat Russia, how can we defeat China?” x.com/ivan_8848/stat… This imperialist puppet is #KajaKallas, former PM of #Estonia FAMOUS RUSSOPHOBE KAJA KALLAS and currently the High Representative of the #EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. Historically illiterate and highly dangerous for the safety of 450 million Europeans. Jeffrey Sachs - Kaja Kallas is one of the most aggressively russophobic politicians in the world. You are completely wrong. He was an ex-radical communist turned right-winger through Soros money. He screwed Slovenia so bad, selling resources and factories left and right, and yes, he is a nationalist followed by 20% of rural Slovenians. Friend of Bibinyahu, Black Cube user.
Professor Richard A. Werner@ProfessorWerner

What Bloomberg calls "nationalist" must mean "politician with normal, sensible views not yet bribed and in the pockets of Brussels and the Epstein class". Good for Slovenia and the people in Europe.

I propose we manage the US like how we train an undomesticated puppy. Ignore it when it's barking for attention, spank it when it's biting furniture, praise it when it's following orders. Always walk it with a leash.

This is an extraordinary document written by the research arm of China's spy agency (the powerful MSS, basically the CIA and the FBI all wrapped in one) that absolutely zero media has picked up on. As far as I can see, I'm the first person to write about it even though it was published (in Chinese) on May 13th on chinadiplomacy.org.cn, a website of China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The document contains perhaps the most authoritative description of where China thinks its relationship with the U.S. stands, and where it’s headed. The title of the report is “The Great Global Transformation and the Path to U.S.–China Coexistence” and I provide a full translation of it in my article, the link of which is at the bottom of this post. To summarize briefly the most important - and, perhaps, surprising - aspect of the document: China's spy agency - the one institution whose entire job is to worry about the U.S. threat - has largely stopped worrying. That's really what transpires from the document. They use a strategic framework borrowed from Mao's "protracted war" theory and, according to this framework, America's offensive phase is finished and China weathered the storm intact. The question is no longer "how do we survive America?" but "how do we manage America?" - and they're proposing a six-step relationship recovery program. I'll let you read the full document as well as my analysis of it here: open.substack.com/pub/arnaudbert…

@RebeccaYChan Yes, I wonder too why smart, rich, uncorruptable and educated people don't go into politics anymore in Europe. As if they ever did. Just failed lawyers, useless MBAs and career opportunists, rarely of a bachelor's level. It must be the weather.

The dollar's reserve status also costs money to maintain. 800+ overseas military bases. Aircraft carrier groups in every ocean. Defense commitments to over 50 countries. The entire NATO funding architecture. That is the subsidy that keeps the dollar as the only option. You are concerned about China's costs. You should price out the American alternative. The dollar isn't free either. It's just that the subsidy is paid in a different budget line called the Pentagon.

Two models of attritional warfare between Ukraine and Russia agree about the imminent collapse of the Ukrainian army, reaching the tipping point of irreplenishable losses rather sooner than later. It’s also important that @Peter_Turchin published his models and forecast as early as 2023, so this is not retroactive manipulation of data. In this light, the recent wave of “Russia is finished” commentary may later look less like a reflection of realities in Russian society and politics, and more like an attempt to engineer a “black swan” event to disrupt dynamics set in motion as early as mid‑2022 and now heading toward their looming outcomes
