@kostantinpankov i would suggest you read some of Tim Grover to see how in certain sports athletes need to hear what is considered abuse and certainly we see soldiers in bootcamp getting berated. It is abusive but it gets results. Now is it affective for female athletes who are more emotional?

@DolphinHelpful No one denies effort. The point is not whether she worked hard. The point is whether humiliation and psychological pressure are institutional tools. Effort is universal. Abuse is not.

But to say it is entirely up to us to let go of anger feels in contradiction with what we know about how trauma is stored in the body and takes time to process the injustices we may face. This is where I think God's grace is so necessary.

@DolphinHelpful @AutismBookClub @sarahsalviander I’d offer that forgiveness necessitates giving up our right to anger and revenge. It makes no sense to say “I forgive you, but I’m staying angry.” It’s a radical thing. I don’t recall it in the novel, much as I enjoy Dumas.

Reading this book in college was a significant factor in my transformation from atheist to theist. It convinced me Christianity was far from philosophically trivial. Plus, it's a great story. Highly recommended.

@AutismBookClub @branthansen @sarahsalviander the book showed our need to beseech the Lord in this way and why we are forgiven in accordance to the extent we forgive. Forgiveness is not easy. Pretending it is, has led to modern Protestantism where all struggle has been bypassed in the name of cheap grace.

@DolphinHelpful @branthansen @sarahsalviander I understand forgiveness. He pursued everyone who had wronged him and either murdered them, ruined them or destroyed them so thoroughly they killed themselves. He didn’t decide to ‘put his to rest demons after wrestling’, he annihilated his enemies.

@AutismBookClub @branthansen @sarahsalviander Forgiveness doesn't mean you reconcile with the people from your past life. It means you decide to put your demons to rest after wrestling. It is comparable to when David committed adultery and wrestled with God. It's subtle but it's there trust

@branthansen @DolphinHelpful @sarahsalviander There was no forgiveness! A tour de force of hatred, revenge and ‘I think I’ll marry my daughter I adopted when she was 11, (but she’s 18 now!) because my true love is now 35’. How does no-one mention that part!? It’s a ‘No’ from me.
