SpaceX launches dozens of Starlink satellites at once (often 50–60 per rocket).
Right after they’re released from the rocket in low Earth orbit (around 200–350 km altitude), they’re still packed closely together and moving at the exact same speed and direction.
From the ground, they look like a long, straight line of bright dots slowly gliding across the sky - exactly like a glowing “train” or string of pearls.
Here’s exactly what people see:
(These are real photos — the satellites are reflecting sunlight, which is why they stay bright even after sunset on the ground.)
Why it looks like that
They’re very close together right after launch.
They’re still in their lowest orbit (brightest and easiest to see).
They travel in a perfect line because they haven’t yet spread out to their final positions.
The “train” effect only lasts a few days to a couple of weeks. Then the satellites use their own thrusters to climb higher (to ~550 km) and separate, so they stop looking like one long chain and become individual faint dots.
Why people get confused
It often gets reported as a UFO because it’s so unusual — a perfect line of moving lights that doesn’t blink or make sound.
But it’s 100% human-made satellites building the Starlink internet constellation.
If you ever spot one, you can track future passes on sites like findstarlink.com or heavens-above.com.
They’re easiest to see 30–90 minutes after sunset or before sunrise on clear nights.

Yesterday, Sgt. Peter Heim and PIO Breck Jones with the Oxford Police Department Drone Unit partnered with Steve Brunton, Stormwater Engineer for the @cityofoxford, to take a proactive look at areas impacted by Winter Storm Fern.
Using drone technology, the team flew over City maintained storm ditches and creeks throughout Oxford to identify trees and limbs that may have fallen into waterways during the recent winter weather. These obstructions, if left unchecked, can damage sewage infrastructure, clog drainage systems, and create larger flooding or environmental issues in the future.
By taking to the air, the Drone Unit was able to safely and efficiently survey hard-to-reach areas, giving the Stormwater Division a clear view of potential problem spots before they turn into costly repairs or community concerns.
This is a great example of how technology, teamwork, and proactive planning help protect Oxford’s infrastructure and keep our community running smoothly even after the storm has passed.

STARLINK SATELLITE EXPANSION IS ONE OF THE LARGEST AND FASTEST INFRASTRUCTURE BUILDS IN HUMAN HISTORY
SpaceX has now launched over 11,400 Starlink satellites, with nearly 10,000 currently in orbit and active.
The constellation is growing so fast that Starlink already serves more than 9 million users across 150+ countries and territories — and the real explosion is still ahead.
Here’s why this scale is a massive deal:
• True global coverage is almost complete
The latest V2 satellites (larger, more powerful, with laser links) are filling the final gaps. Polar regions, deep oceans, remote deserts, and mountain ranges that never had reliable internet are now coming online fast.
• Direct-to-Cell is coming soon
Regular smartphones will soon connect directly to Starlink satellites — no dish needed. Emergency calls, texts, and basic data will work literally anywhere on Earth.
• Speeds & reliability keep improving
Average speeds are already 100–300+ Mbps with low latency. As more satellites join, the network gets faster, more resilient, and capable of handling tens of millions of users.
• Real-world impact is already enormous
• Disaster zones restored within hours
• Rural schools and hospitals in Africa, South America, and Asia now have high-speed internet for the first time
• Commercial flights, ships, mining operations, and remote communities run on Starlink
• Conflict zones stayed connected when ground networks were destroyed
• It funds the multiplanetary future
Starlink revenue is the main cash engine paying for Starship development. Every new satellite launched is helping build the vehicle that will take humanity to Mars.
This isn’t just “satellite internet.”
This is the largest, fastest-deployed global communications network ever created — turning “no signal” into a sentence from the past for billions of people.
The expansion is relentless, and the best is still coming.

The most efficient U.S. road trip route, as determined by a data scientist…
In 2015, data scientist Dr. Randal Olson created what he dubbed the “perfect” U.S. road trip using genetic algorithms—a type of search heuristic—to tackle the classic Traveling Salesman Problem. His aim was to chart the most efficient route visiting either 50 major national landmarks or all 47–50+ National Parks without needless backtracking. The final route stretches over 13,699 miles, covering all 48 contiguous states and iconic sites like the Statue of Liberty, the Alamo, and Yellowstone. While the pure driving time totals roughly 224 hours, most travelers would spend 2 to 3 months completing the journey with sightseeing.
