I broke a heart today. I had to remove a layer of my daughter's childhood and teach her about the world. She asked me what abortion was after seeing the word on a poster somewhere. I told her what it was - parents and doctors murdering unborn babies. At 13, my daughter's world changed. I was both proud and immensely sad to witness the horror and disgust on her face as she kept repeating: "But why? But how?" I am proud of the child my daughter is but I am sad I had to split her world into two. Yesterday, my daughter spent the entire day not knowing that some people butcher little babies. Now, she knows. And it's breaking her heart. It isn't easy to teach kids that the world is both good and evil. My daughter went from thinking that this world is almost heaven-like to thinking that it's hell-like. I tell her that it's the valley of tears with moments of sunshine, a pilgrimage that is incredibly hard but that this Earth still smells of Our Lord whose feet touched the same soil we do now. Evil exists but it will not win. We carry the sadness over the evil around us, the shame over the evils we ourselves commit but, above all, we carry faith, hope and charity. Because that's what being Catholic is.
