@PublicHealth says Liberate! Don’t Incarcerate. Our communities have long known systems that cage our people are antithetical to public health. And now it’s official APHA policy too! Gratitude to those creating health, outside harmful carceral systems, like @MHFirstOak
End Police Violence Collective@endpolviolence

Our policy statement on carceral systems and on abolition as a public health strategy has PASSED 86% - 14% and is now PERMANENT POLICY of @PublicHealth. We know that abolition is public health, and now it's official! #APHA2021 Read the policy here: endingpoliceviolence.com

Thread. A lot of people not familiar with judges don't know about one of the biggest ongoing scandals: profiting off poor people's blood. Over the years, many of my clients have been forced by judges to sell their own blood plasma in order to pay court fees for minor arrests.

For the past 6 months, I asked for ARPA funds for unarmed crisis response, a UBI program, and social service orgs. After meeting with BIPOC communities and nonprofits, it’s clear pandemic recovery needs to be centered on racial justice and equity. It’s happening. #a2council

The use of police as first responders in situations of crisis only leads to more deaths. Officers who are called to help individuals get medical treatment often end up shooting them instead. More here: prisonpolicy.org/blog/2020/06/0…

When US Border Patrol formed in 1924, its agents were recruited from Klansmen and paramilitary Texas Rangers who, as Kelly Lytle Hernández details, “battled Indigenous groups, chased down runaway slaves, and settled scores with anyone who challenged the Anglo-American project."

We cannot rely on the violence of the state to address the violence visited against our communities. We deserve better and we are committed to creative, transformative solutions to these issues through approaches that center and strengthen community.

Hate crime laws frame police + prosecutors as protectors of marginalized communities, obscuring that the criminal legal system is one of the most significant sources of violence. Expanded hate crimes will favor the powerful + further oppress those fighting against injustice. 3/
