@OwenGregorian @Cernovich To this day I can't eat Kraft Macaroni and cheese. It was 25 cents a box when I was in college, and I ate a lot of boxes. (I predate ramen). My dad bought me a case of C-rations from salvage. Oh, boy, protein!

College living used to be pinching pennies. They used to say live like you did in college to avoid lifestyle inflation. Today that would mean catered meals made by chefs, or DoorDash. They could have a zoomer Survivor in a city just by giving them $200/mo and telling them to figure out how to feed themselves.

Boomers and Gen X packed lunches. Not sure why this stuff enrages zoomers. Boomers lived frugally. Going out to lunch was a big deal. Most didn't have long lunch breaks, especially blue collar. You didn't DoorDash, dinners were made at home. I don't even DoorDash in 2026.

@orsonscottcard I miss The Alien Critic. John Boardman called me a fascist because of a letter I wrote, before Fascist became the universal (and useless) perjorative.

On criticism: Richard Geis taught me years ago that the harshest review is silence. A scathing review merely makes the title of your work sound familiar to a book buyer browsing. And in my experience, only a positive review is worth writing, because it may introduce readers to good books they might not otherwise have found.

@ProfMJCleveland The sad and disturbing thing is the sense she was chosen for utter political reliability, not merit, not DEI. Just someone who will rule in favor of "progressive," ideals, without thought of prudence, law or consequence.

@TrentTelenko E.E Smith, early writer of space opera, wrote a segment of his novel, "Triplanetary," involving corruption at a big explosives plant. A slightly odd way to learn a bit of military history.

Military procurement corruption is universal. The USA had a great deal of it in WW2. The Truman commission had a lot of real work on its hands. It just isn't acknowledged in most histories of the era.

The funniest thing about Americans and accents is how lots of you guys say, "I don't have an accent." I just had this interaction. You do, in fact, have accents. 😂 Have a friend from the Midwest whose accent takes me out. The way she says "fire" and "kitten" is so funny. Californian accent is super distinct. Of course, Southern accents are very distinct. My man's Texan accent is very *there*. He says "well awwwlll raaaiigghttt" regularly, which is hilarious. Don't let everyone tell you that you guys aren't unique. You sound weird as fuck, but you all absolutely have accents. I yearn to hear the Louisiana swamp accent in real life. 😭

Traveling is the most annoying hobby because Jake spends a week in a tourist trap & comes back lisping Barcelona & marveling at the existence of outdoor markets that have JAMÓN IBÉRICO & it's like dude, there's a farmer's market 5 blocks from your apartment, buy some locally sourced ham & STFU 🤦🏻‍♀️
Coddled Affluent Professional@feelsdesperate

Traveling really isn’t that impressive. It’s not hard to do. You just go to an airport and get on a plane. It’s not a big accomplishment. Then you go somewhere and you have no responsibilities or obligations and just wander around and so of course it’s pleasurable enough. Traveling is fine. I’ve been to about 45 countries. But it’s not worth making big sacrifices for or delaying real life more than a year or two or anything like that.

@ChristinaPushaw @lizisamused The learning was two-way. I fondly recall our American professor telling us we should visit the Shwarma place down the street, the Happy Chicken. Behind him, one of the Romanian students was shaking his head and looking appalled. When we checked it out, we understood why.

@lizisamused Sure, but I think it's cool when people have traveled to legitimately unusual and adventurous destinations. Like I know someone who did a tour of all the former Soviet -Stan countries in central Asia. Getting a visa for Turkmenistan is an achievement in itself.

@dalepartridge @sgruber91 Bathsheba might like a word. She teamed up with Nathan the prophet to ensure Solomon ascended the throne of Israel after Adonijah tried to usurp it. Solomon's wisdom was a gift of God...but some of thr base material came from Mom.

@ostrachan Ruth is loyal and loving. Bathsheba begins as a victim but becomes an experienced mistress of intrigue to protect Solomon. And you can add villainess like Jezebel and Athaliah, who are evil, but competent and who meet the fates they deserve just as wicked men do.

What nonsense this is! In the Bible, Jael is shrewd; Abigail is wise; a woman saves her city from Joab; Deborah judges Israel well; the Proverbs 31 woman has great "wisdom." Some in the "patriarchy"/nationalist crowd are deeply anti-woman, and it is a stench in God's nostrils.

Rx I mean Blofeld had the most appearances, but the various actors portrayals have varied in degree of menace. Max Zorin is Walken, for all that comes with it, a mix of danger and quirky/weird. Bardem's character was forgettable. The man who inspired Bond, although he played a relatively 'small potatoes' villain, played him with far and away the most aura, well above and beyond the threat to the planet he represented.

Good evening, my lethal fucking darlings. I had been up for two straight goddamn days...eyes burning, mind razor-wired, body running on pure venom and will...because that’s how we do this. Needless to say I crashed out hardcore yesterday. I’m still clawing my way back into the rhythm, but I’m here now, and I’m not wasting a single second of it. Last time I checked the charts, we are sitting at #15 on the Substack bestseller list. #15. Not because I’m some polished little content prince. Not because of algorithms or luck or any of that soft-handed horseshit. It’s because of you. My people. My savage, ride-or-die legion. You showed up, you shared the fire, you bled ink and attention into this war with me. Every single one of you is the reason the blade stays sharp and the numbers keep climbing. You are my driving force. My fuel. My reason to keep swinging when the rest of the world is asleep or pretending. I love you viciously. I love you like a loaded gun loves its target. I love you with every profane, unfiltered, precision-cut ounce of my soul. So stay dangerous tonight, my darlings. Keep the fire lit. I’m right here with you...catching up, catching breath, and already loading the next round. Now let's go be fucking unstoppable. I'll get back to you guys as soon as I can. I need caffeine in my bloodstream. 💀🗡️🩸

The Supreme Court just stated that the Voting Rights Act does not allow for the creation of racist districts. It is you racist Democrats who perverted the VRA into a tool of racism. How DARE YOU pretend to be on the same side as the noble Republican civil rights warriors of the 1960s. Invoking the name of those who actually fought racism in the past in order to promote your racist agenda today is despicable. You are not on that side. You are on the side of your Democrat forebears in promoting racism. SHAME ON YOU.

Has the NYT reported -- as PBS reported -- that such VIP snorkle outings, guided by SEALS, are not unusual. The Navy simply does not publicize them and they take place without cameras or the press around. "Still, since at least the Obama administration, the Navy and the park service have quietly allowed a handful of dignitaries, including military and government officials responsible for management of the memorial, to swim at the site. The Navy and park service declined to provide details of those permitted to take such excursions." "Among those afforded invitations to snorkel have been Navy admirals, secretaries of defense and interior, according to the former government diver. The diver added that the swims were intended to provide officials insights into the memorial and its operations." "The Navy declined to provide examples or numbers showing how frequently it organizes such excursions. It described Patel's outing as "not an anomaly." "I have not heard of anyone who would object to these visits as they are very rare and there aren't any survivors of the Arizona left alive," Deidre Kelley, national president of the Sons and Daughters of Pearl Harbor Survivors, wrote in an email. "Their children might have some objections but I haven't heard any." "Patel visited Pearl Harbor several years ago during a trip he made to Hawaii while serving as chief of staff to Christopher Miller, then the acting secretary of defense, according to the former government diver." "Miller said he snorkeled over the Arizona during an official visit to the base, but Patel was not present for that excursion. Miller said he was invited to snorkel by regional military officials and was told such a tour was for "special occasions and for special visitors, of which you're one." He called it a "meaningful" experience." "The FBI said in a statement that top regional commanders hosted Patel at Joint Base Harbor-Hickam "as they commonly do with US government officials on official travel." The Pearl Harbor visit, the spokesman said, "was part of the Director's public national security engagements last August with counterparts in New Zealand, Australia, our Honolulu Field Office, and the Department of War." pbs.org/newshour/polit… I'm having trouble figuring out what all the fuss is about -- seems to me its a lot of PDS (Patel Derangement Syndrome).
Kyle Griffin@kylegriffin1

NYT confirms — with new details: Last year, Navy SEALs used two boats to escort Kash Patel and nine others on what a Pentagon email called a 'VIP Snorkel' next to one of the military's most sacred sites, the underwater tomb of the U.S.S. Arizona. One Navy vet called the swim "horrifying." nytimes.com/2026/05/15/us/…
