If Labour can’t win Makerfield with Andy Burnham as the candidate, everyone in the party should start packing up now. It’s a much more important proof of concept than running in Rusholme or Withington, which (with the best will in the world) wouldn’t prove very much at all.

The Dogs (Protection of Livestock) (Amendment) Act 2025 came into effect recently. Allowing your dog to chase, run at, or cause distress to livestock is now a serious offence. Can anyone explain why the Government, couldn't simply bring in a law that provided the same protection to wild mammals. It would end illegal hunting within months.

@GhostFraser @AnnelieseDodds Rubbish. There were drag hunts, not trail hunts. The whole point of the creation of trail hunting in 2005 was to mimic fox hunting, because drag hunting is more of an equestrian event. There'd be no bloody point mimicking fox hunting because it was still going on, ffs.

@regan_gil @AnnelieseDodds Trail hunting started in the 2004/2005 season. Hounds will only be killed if you lot kill them. Why not repay all those years of service by dipping in your pockets and paying for their upkeep in kennels until they die a natural death over the next four of five years.

@herbieharry @Ruth_Evershed19 @DMBean @CAupdates These were t working dogs, they're dogs used for recreational purposes. There's no exemption for hounds chasing livestock as the exemption only applies to section 2(c) which is the subsection relating to dogs being "at large"

This must be the first use of the Dogs (Protection of Livestock) (Amendment) Act 2025, championed by the @CAupdates. My heart goes out to the poor alpaca poppets killed or injured, and their owners, but I'm glad there's now a mechanism for justice.

To be honest, the transition to the "wilding" of road-side verges arose around the same time as funding cuts to council highway budgets, that meant that verges weren't managed as before. Doubt it was a coincidence. Having said that, the addition of wild seeds etc certainly is good to see.

In shameful contradistinction to Starmer’s failure to raise defence spending, even Neville Chamberlain, as he tried and failed to appease Nazi Germany in the late Thirties, saw the need to ramp up rearmament. It grew from roughly 3% of GDP in the mid 1930s to over 7% by 1938, even as Chamberlain was trying to negotiate with Hitler, approaching 9–10% before mobilisation in 1939. Starmer is struggling to reach 2.5%.

The definition used by the Government is dangerously narrow, being "the activity in which a dog is directed to find and follow an animal-based scent which has been laid for that purpose. “Animal-based scent” means: a scent which is derived from a wild mammal, or a scent which mimics, replicates or resembles the scent of a wild mammal (or which is designed to do so), whether or not that scent is derived wholly or in part from artificial ingredients". This specifically excludes hunts that use (or pretend to use) clove oil. The BHSA used clove oil in their public trail hunting events.

Anyone with an ounce of common sense can see this consultation isn’t limited to “trail hunting only” the questions aren’t narrowly framed. They invite views on exemptions, enforcement, loopholes and wider practices. If it was meant to be restrictive, it would be written that way.

Antis fear Starmer will allow most hunting with hounds. The Times ramps up hate against staghunters. There are signs that the antis are nervous the government is going to stick to the letter of its manifesto commitment to ban trailhunting, and only trailhunting. With only around 1% of working dogs in the UK involved in trailhunting, antis persuaded The Times newspaper to publish an article about the legal and widely enjoyed sport of staghunting on Exmoor as if it were a criminal activity. Starmer did not promise to ban stag hunting, buck hunting, beagling rabbits, basseting, minkhounds chasing rats, longdogs on rabbits, ratting with terriers or any of the dog work in shooting sports, let alone ferreting, falconry or using bumblebees to flush mice.
