(And I know 😭 It was his bday yesterday, and I added about 10 years to my internal age-image in a day)

@DougBattersby @thomasmanganaro I haven’t thought about it systematically, but the one we’re reading now is from the 1950s. Definitely worth thinking about children’s lit. (Also, 2?! How?! What is time??)

So what’s happened is I’ve been working a lot on free indirect discourse lately and I was reading a children’s book to my 8yo that was full of it and suddenly he stopped me and said: “Wait, what’s going on? Who’s even narrating this? Is it the narrator or the character?”

@becimay But also to suggest a greater uniformity amongst critics than there really is? Sure, there are a lot of American critics who are burdening close readings with unnecessary descriptors etc., but also plenty of others who view it as Guillory does – just "showing the work of reading"
