This quote from David Wells is practically a masterclass in the nature and purpose of theology:

My dog has learned how to open the back door of my house. I thought it was a fluke at first, but he has done so three times in a row. I guess I now need to teach him how to close it. Here’s hoping he does a better job remembering to do that than my four boys do 😂

The original, pre-Disney Pinocchio goes so much harder than you could imagine. The world isn’t receptive of this wisdom, but we desperately need it 👇🏻

1. This man is an anti-modern hero. (Πορεύου καὶ σὺ ποίει ὁμοίως.) 2. The replies to this story reveal how utilitarian most people now are. They cannot fathom why a man would pass on $26M. But he’s discovered better, something more important, something that money cannot buy.

NEW: Kentucky family rejects $26 million offer to convert part of their farm into a data center despite the offer being about 10 times the going rate for farmland in the area. "If it's my way, I'll stay and hold and feed a nation. 26 million doesn't mean anything." "As long as I'm on this land, as long as it's feeding me, as long as it's taking care of me, there's nothing that can destroy me if I've got this land." Video: Local 12 WKRC

Yes, that’s a common talking point in this discussion. I love the idea of church and state being separate, that is, having separate jobs in accordance with God’s duties for each (the keys and the sword), while both are governed by the Lordship of Christ. “Christians ought to pray and to labor that the Kingdom may come and *God’s will be done on earth*.” (Article IX) “All Christians are under obligation to seek to make the will of Christ supreme in our own lives *and in human society*.” (Article XV)

@dougponder @BaptistLeaders It seems to me that, to be meaningful, the BFM should all be required if any of it is required. However (and for example), those most committed to the strict enforcement of article VI routinely grant a pass on article XVII.

“The Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) isn’t feminist yet, but it’s getting there fast.” Here are the receipts, along with why you should care and what you can (must) do about it 👇🏻
Christ Over All@Christ_OverAll

“If women are appointed to function like pastors/elders/overseers, it’s never long before they ask, ‘Why am I not allowed to be a pastor? I am already acting like one.’” @dougponder argues that while the SBC isn’t feminist yet, powerful leaders are pushing it in that direction faster than many realize. christoverall.com/article/concis…

For those who want to partner as a likeminded body, as SBC churches confessedly do, we should be aiming for the greatest possible agreement, not some least common denominator. Yet even in some kind of undesirable LCD situation, agreeing on who can pastor God’s flock would make the cut. So, the following should be mandatory: “While both men and women are gifted for service in the church, the office of pastor/elder/overseer is limited to men as qualified by Scripture.” (BF&M 2000, Article VI)

This month @Christ_OverAll has been overwhelmed with excellent essays about the Southern Baptist Convention, but this one by @dougponder might be the most hard-hitting. christoverall.com/article/concis…

@GShaneMorris Yes, and Postman got that from McLuhan, of course. Also, FWIW, I’m working on an article for CBMW about AI. People on X have been feeding me a lot of material to critique 😏

There are just so many people in the AI convo who need to read Neil Postman. The constant assertions/assumptions that all technologies are neutral tools dependent on the user's morals are stunningly naive. You challenge that assumption & people keep repeating it like a catechism.

@glnelsoniii Exactly. I think the line of reasoning that says the SBC isn’t a denom is pedantic and unhelpful.

@dougponder You note the SBC is not technically a denomination, but looks like one by any usual measure (my paraphrase). That's why this female pastor business matters so much. Church autonomy, on its own, is an insufficient standard for unity (for obvious reasons). There has to be more.
