@MatthewSitman First time I encountered LitC was via a seminar with the incomparable Bill Wilson down on Seabrook Island and it was like Percy had peered right into my depressed/repressed teen soul. A wild experience

Per my previous post quoting Walker Percy's LOST IN THE COSMOS: looking back, I do think encountering Percy in my early 20s has been the decisive literary experience of my life so far. He loved bourbon, became Catholic, and decided not to kill himself. You tell me if you can perceive his influence

"The ex-suicide opens his front door, sits down on the steps, and laughs. Since he has the option of being dead, he has nothing to lose by being alive. It is good to be alive. He goes to work because he doesn't have to."

The southern renascence generations were an unusual example of reactionary formalism Also being an expression of subaltern subversion and much of the enduring value in that tradition comes from that inherent contradiction
Nat Purser@NatPurser

genuine q: what was it about the 20s to 60s in the South that brought about a golden age of formally ambitious, enduring literature — carson mccullers, william faulkner, flannery o connor, tennessee williams, harper lee, eudora welty, etc.

@Nicholas_Olson Right now I'm going to say The New World (Malick), Mishima (Schrader), Mirror (Tarkovsky), and Until the End of the World (Wenders). Always in flux!

@PastorAndyWebb The quoted advice is very clearly advice on how /to/ legally cooperate with ICE, and your characterization is so far from the truth as to likely risk civil liability. I'm not your lawyer, but if I were I would be strongly advising you to take this down.

X blew up yesterday when it was discovered that the PCA's Mission to North America had a page advising aliens in the country illegally not to cooperate with US law enforcement. The page has since been taken down and PCA sources say, "the page in question was a resource page that cobbled together other sites and their advice. The page existed because churches are asking for help in their local situations." But this begs the question why a church that confesses, "It is the duty of people to pray for magistrates, to honor their persons, to pay them tribute and other dues, to obey their lawful commands, and to be subject to their authority, for conscience’ sake." (Westminster Confession of Faith 23.4) would have created a page that advises people how to continue breaking a law that does not go against the word of God?

I finally made it through the other side and reached a point of equilibrium by which through sheer not sleeping and live blogging 45 year old Italian historical novels I am posting just as good as I was when I was OBLITERATED on rum.

Voltaire proving that he can do something other than being a whimsical French perverted version of Chesterton, dropping epigramatic little paradoxes about fucking your mistress, and doing so by walking up to Rousseau and ripping off his head with his bare hands.
Adam Johnson@adamjohnsonCHI

my all time favorite beef escalation is when Rousseau called the theater immoral and Voltaire, France’s leading dramatist at the time, said yeah well how about that time you abandoned your 5 kids and left them to die

@ustadh_dragoman I met a wild raven on a glacier in Iceland that would constantly make the iPhone camera sound because that's how it thought humans said hello
