As a chess coach, I prayed my 6 year old student would lose today. Before you judge me……😭 He was getting absolutely crushed in game 1. I mean dismantled. It was painful to watch. But then his opponent made one terrible blunder and somehow, miraculously, he won. I was proud of him for hanging in there. I told him so. But I also told him that was a lucky game and we needed to work on playing better chess. He looked at me and said “I don’t need good chess. I’m lucky.” I told him luck runs out. Good chess doesn’t. You can practice good chess, build it, own it. You can’t practice luck. He disagreed. Completely unbothered. 😂 Game 2. Same story. Terrible position, getting crushed, and then his opponent blundered again. He won again. He walked back to me and said “SEE. I told you.” I had no words. 😭 At this point I’m actively rooting against my own student. I needed game 3 to do what game 1 and 2 refused to do. Game 3. Same bad chess. Except this time his opponent didn’t blunder. Nobody saved him. He lost. He came back to me. Quiet this time. “Okay. Teach me good chess.” And just like that, the most humbling coaching moment of my week ended with a 6 year old finally making sense. 😂 Have you ever had to let someone fail to teach them something? Tell me I’m not alone…..

@sama Sure, I think I get it. But nothing is stopping us from writing code... It may just fall back to us hobbyists who like to tinker, but editors and compilers will still exist. Right?

I am sure we will figure out much better and more interesting ways to spend our time, and amazing new ways to be useful to each other, but I am feeling nostalgic for the present.

I am very excited about AI, but to go off-script for a minute: I built an app with Codex last week. It was very fun. Then I started asking it for ideas for new features and at least a couple of them were better than I was thinking of. I felt a little useless and it was sad.

I feel old saying this, but what the fuck is up with modern tech? It’s like we let the idiots run this world. Code is shit. Negates all our gains in hardware over the last 30 years. Watch a video of opening MS Word on Windows 98 vs today and you would never guess that 98 came out over 20 years ago. We’ve been devolving when it comes to software. Look at the horrible pile of shit Windows has become. It was never great, but Windows 11 is embarrassing. It’s not just MS. And they’re all collecting “telemetry”. Cars. Smart Appliances. Games even. They’ve turned into shit spyware that we have the privilege of paying for (often on a subscription basis). I don’t want any of it. I won’t buy a modern car that listens and watches me and broadcasts beacons or needs a subscription. I won’t buy a “smart” appliance that will charge me a subscription and spy. Nobody wants to outright sell a game or software, it’s a license to use now. I’m done. Fuck this shit. I’ll buy used everything until I can’t fix it any more. As long as people buy this trash we will keep getting fed garbage.
