Michael Ma has, in effect, set a troubling precedent—putting a name and a face to the concept of foreign interference in a way that resonates beyond Canada. In doing so, he appears to have lost sight of a fundamental responsibility: as a Canadian MP, his duty is to serve the people of Canada and uphold the country’s national interest. Canada’s Parliament and its political parties are not tools to be used at anyone’s convenience to advance the interests of foreign states. He also seems to have underestimated an important reality in Canada: denial of serious human rights abuses—including genocide, forced labour, and transnational repression—carries real political consequences. Those consequences are now becoming evident. At the same time, the support and visibility he has gained among audiences in China, including circles aligned with the Chinese Communist Party, only reinforces these concerns. This is precisely what people mean when they warn about foreign influence—when an elected official’s actions appear to align more closely with the interests and narratives of another state than with those of Canada. Through his own actions, he has illustrated what foreign interference can look like in practice—and why it is taken so seriously in Canada. @MarkJCarney @liberal_party

I agree. It’s stunning to hear a politician at this level be so outright wrong about geopolitics. Is he really getting briefed by conspiracy theorists? This is embarrassing. Ma yesterday and Kinew today. The quality of some Canadian politicians is deeply concerning.

One of the dumbest Canadian politicians on the geopolitics file is Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew who thinks the war in Iran is because of Epstein files: "​I hope this war in Iran ends. Even the Trump administration cannot explain why they're at war in Iran right now. And I mean, like, the Epstein file seems to be as good of a reason as anyone else can think of." You have to be completely disconnected from reality to be this ignorant. Don't remember him being upset about the Islamic Regime slaughtering tens of thousands and funding terrorism. And if he wants to protect kids, and I hope he does, he should focus on what is going on in his province.
