@sbkaufman Hey Scott I’ve thought about this on and off for some time. University contexts encourage and value debate etc but also equip people to do it. So maybe on fruitful is to explore “constructive disagreement” as a learned capability and less as a trait.

I've said it before but I fundamental believe that it's possible to be disagreeable intellectually but not interpersonally. I don't think the field of personality psychology or society at large have adequately has differentiated between the two. I fundamentally believe that a lot of disagreements in our society should be a disagreement between ideas rather than a personal fight between people who have hurt feelings. People often confuse these different forms of disagreeableness-- one which I think is mostly good for society (intellectual disagreement) and another which I think is mostly detrimental to society (interpersonal antagonism).

@MCG58 Thanks for your response. Serious question. How are you distinguishing between being very disappointed or anxious in competitive environments and “believing they are their ATAR”?

@DrLindC Hi Lindsay - not a strawperson argument at all - many Year 12 students still believe that they are their ATAR.

The ATAR does not measure the worth of an individual, their character, wit, ideas, intelligence, kindness, attributes, skills and all of the things that make them the person they are. It tell us how good they are at studying for or taking exams. #urnoturATAR
