@PublicPolicyUoS @LordRedesdale thank you for the insightful masterclass last week. 🔑🫵 Academics should share headline info about research within 12 seconds/words to best engage policymakers. Will use advice for our upcoming #obesity policy roundtable.

@IsabelO20183051 I agree labelling doesn't work and people can still buy confec or snack in aisles . The leg is aimed at reducing impulse sales of unhealthy foods at prominent places so people arent bombarded with it. Placing healthier foods in prominent areas has been shown to improve health

@DrSarahMuir People will buy them all the same. If you don’t understand nutrition with a wide internet library on it then a supermarket labelling will make zero difference.

@IsabelO20183051 No people are not overweight because of supermarkets but in the UK regulating the food system to ensure that healthier food is more affordable and available to the public than foods high in fat, salt and sugar is likely to have better impact on health.

The legislation is complex and a central HFSS calculator, #smallbusiness support and resources for local authorities would help consistent implementation and enforcement. Independent evaluation of the legislation will understand intended and unintended consequences.

Our recently published work shows that world-leading UK #HFSS #legislation is a great first step but loopholes, legislation exemptions, and high cost of #healthyfood may undermine #health benefits and lead to problems in #healthequity see🧵👇

From today supermarkets and larger convenience stores are no longer allowed to stock high fat, sugar and salt foods in prominent areas in store (end of aisles, checkout sets). Read our @bmj_latest piece for why this is important bmj.com/content/378/bm…
