Primary Care Collaborative (PCC)
Is primary care the missing strategy in the federal government’s fight against chronic disease? A new report finds that people who have regular #primarycare are more likely to receive preventive services—and those with chronic disease have better health and lower costs. buff.ly/imnmX6E

I was honored to join health care leaders and partners at the @NACHC Policy & Issues Forum this week. There is real momentum right now around strengthening primary care, and it was energizing to be in the room with people doing the challenging but rewarding work every day for their communities. One of the highlights was introducing with @KyuRheeMD a new coordinated effort from @aafp, @NACHC and @PC4America to improve access to primary care. Our shared goals are straightforward and ambitious: ▪️ Double investment in primary care ▪️ Double the reach of primary care, starting with community health centers ▪️ Double the number of clinicians practicing in primary care Yesterday’s discussions reinforced how ready this community is to move from conversation to action. I hope you will join us by signing up to learn more at primarycareforamerica.org/goals/. This is just the beginning.

🚨 Pete Buttigieg nails it: “In a country that amended the Constitution to ban beer… then fixed it when we realized it was dumb… surely we can amend it again to say corporations aren’t people and money isn’t speech.” Translation: We corrected Prohibition. We can correct Citizens United. Democracy shouldn’t be for sale.

It is dangerous for national leadership to ignore science in favor of conspiracy theories. A few weeks back, I was proud to march in DC with The Coalition for a Healthy America and the Committee to Protect Healthcare, calling for the firing of RFK Jr.

Rep. Kathleen LaNatra, @DrWayneAltman and @virnalittle, PsyD, testified today in favor of H.2220/S.1390 to expand access to collaborative care - an evidence-based model of integrated #behavioralhealth in primary care that has been shown to improve health outcomes + reduce costs.

There has been an escalating conversation regarding the low-supply/pipeline of primary care physicians in the U.S. This is a real problem, and it deserves more attention and more urgency. What is missing from our discussions are some hard truths about the performance of U.S. medical schools and their inability to meet the workforce needs of the states and communities they serve. Primary care represents about 11% of the US physician workforce. Most workforce experts believe this number needs to be closer to 30%. Unfortunately, only 27% of US medical schools meet this threshold. We need to improve the practice environment and increase investment in primary care - no question. However, medical schools are not innocent bystanders, and we should expect more from them. If we are serious about meeting the primary care needs of current and future generations, we need our medical schools to become more serious partners in these efforts and, we should not rule out performance thresholds that tie funding to primary care output.

The MA leader that's 'skeptical' of PC4YOU, Dr. Eric Dickson, CEO of UMass Memorial has endorsed the PC4YOU bill, and states that he likes the plan, calling it aspirational. Real solutions that deliver health & equity for the people of MA won't be easy but we must move forward!
