Pleased to share our latest research on how the public perceives Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs), using over a decade of data from X (formerly Twitter). Supervised by Dr. Naif M. Alotaibi @NaifMA1 / Dr. Lior Elkaim @LiorElkaim1 and co-authored by an amazing multidisciplinary team from King Fahad Medical City, King Faisal Specialist Hospital, McGill University, University of Toronto, and Mayo Clinic. @JordanLevett19 @ben_li123 @Dr_Alomran — This study offers just a snapshot in time—the first step toward understanding how society emotionally engages with neurotechnology. We analyzed 65,340 posts from 38,926 unique users (2010–2021 prior to Musk's acquisition of Twitter) using a robust NLP pipeline: • VADER for sentiment scoring • TextBlob for subjectivity • NRCLex for emotion detection • Sentiment.ai to infer user types • BERTopic for semantic clustering Validation measures included: Duplicate removal and Manual review of a random sample of 1,000 posts Key Findings: • Neutral sentiment dominated (59.4%) — signaling uncertainty or information-sharing • Positive: 32.75% | Negative: 7.85% • Objective tone: 77.8% • Top emotions: → Anticipation (20.6%) → Trust (17.6%) → Fear (14%) • Major interest spike in 2017, following Neuralink and Facebook’s BCI announcements — Insights: • Elon Musk was a major amplifier of excitement. • Gamification drove enthusiasm — likely a vital tool for public education • Fear patterns resembled those seen with Wi-Fi, 5G, and early internet technologies. • While sentiment wasn’t fully polarized, emotional responses were complex and layered. — It appears that gamified experiences and ethical transparency may play a key role in minimizing fear and encouraging public acceptance. They seem to make BCI more approachable, relatable, and potentially more trustworthy — but this remains an open question for future exploration. Working on this project deepened my understanding of big data analytics and allowed me to explore different NLP tools in academic research.
