The UK @ternfellow EDcorridor study is out! Key points 1. 1in5 are treated in ED escalation areas (eg corridors) 2. 10-25% of EDs have no available resus cubicle 3. The problem/solution is flow. More patients waiting for beds in ED than in corridors. doi.org/10.1136/emerme…

Burnout remains a issue beyond training in EM. Half reducing hours to protect themselves. Needs a whole system response. #EMTA2025

People with minor conditions take minutes to treat or redirect. Are not the cause of the current collapse of emergency care. Hospitals that try deflecting minor patients just don’t get the root cause of the problem. Not understanding the root cause = no chance of improvement.

NHS short staffing is associated with at least 4,000 extra deaths annually, shown in @CUH_NHS and @UniOfSurrey @bmj_latest research. High staff turnover and reliance on agency workers are leading to severe consequences, especially in A&Es. There is an urgent need for a stable and well-staffed workforce to ensure patient safety and quality care #ResuscitateEmergencyCare 🔗 mirror.co.uk/news/health/nh…

#ICYMI "The report also clearly details the issues within and outside Emergency Departments which cause and exacerbate the problems its staff and patients continue to battle – such as long waits in corridors caused by the lack of in-patient beds and difficulties discharging people who are medically well enough to leave. All of these have been repeatedly raised by RCEM." Read RCEM's Vice President, Ian Higginson's @RCEM_VP response to the Care Quality Commission’s (CQC) State of Care report that was published this week ⬇️⬇️ rcem.ac.uk/rcem-responds-…

RCEM President @RCEMpresident talking about a very important change in policy: “we need to boundary our Emergency Departments. It’s a 10 year plan, but we need to limit who can come to the ED.” This would be a massive change. @RCEMevents

Details of the #DarziReview of @NHSEngland have just been released. RCEM is pleased to have been part of the Expert Reference Group, and that our concerns about the dangerous effects of overcrowding and long waits in A&E have been reflected in the report. Disrespect doesn’t just make people feel bad. It leads them to perform worse. Evidence from medical teams: Even a single insult decreases the quality of diagnoses and procedures. Rudeness disrupts focus and undermines collaboration. Civility is not optional. It’s vital.

Wow @HHFTCharity thank you so much for our new toys to distract and improve children’s care when attending our Winchester Children’s Emergency Area! They are so much fun and the children absolutely love them, those in resus will certainly prefer looking at the ceiling now!

Maybe all ED staff ought to spend a bit of time in 'civilian' clothes sitting in the ED waiting room. It is miserable being an ED patient at the moment - but there are some low cost things that could be provided that would make it more bearable - free tea? emj.bmj.com/content/early/…

A&E attendance for children 0-4 years ⬆️42% in last 10 yrs - mostly for minor illnesses, feeding probs, infant crying previously managed by health visitors🚨👶🏿👶🏼👶🏾 Cutting health visitors by ⬆️40% over the same period has been a false economy 🚨 ihv.org.uk/news-and-views…

Sadly no breakdown from NHS England by Age. Strategic plan for 2024/25 will only 'consider' disaggregating data. Not splitting by age hides even further the perilous state that adult emergency care is in, but also hides deterioration in trends for Children & Young people.

For quite a while people outside ED have looked in & said - ‘the patients could go elsewhere’ The staff in ED have been pretty confident that these are ED patients & just need flow and staffing to meet the patient need -it appears they were right! hsj.co.uk/emergency-care…
