@unusual_whales I'm wondering if we have even a month. Then again, I thought that before the 2+ months of Trump bluffing. That seems to have played itself out, though, finally.

@_InfoGram_ I actually kind of bought this one. Makes sense that the gulf states would want to avoid making themselves targets. Good rationale from the liars up top.

Yesterday, 🇺🇸 Trump — “I paused a U.S. strike on Iran because Gulf leaders asked for more time to negotiate.” Today, Gulf officials — “We didn’t know about any imminent U.S. attack.” Now even Trump’s allies are calling him the biggest liar alive. Absolute cinema 🤣🔥

The NYT article reveals that our military is telling President Trump what has been obvious from the onset of this war: there is no quick military solution in Iran and our early actions set the conditions for the stalemate we are in now. Trump’s best option is to declare victory and walk away now. Limit our exposure in the region, reduce the risk of Iran restarting the war on their terms, and reset negotiations with sanctions relief as both carrot and stick. The Iranians have adapted to our attacks. They can “win” simply by not losing. Future strikes will be less effective, cost us more in casualties, and further harden Iranian resolve. Killing the Supreme Leader rallied the Iranian people around the regime. By also eliminating many moderate leaders, we’ve left ourselves with mostly hardliners to negotiate with, who are unlikely to give Trump the concessions he’s demanding. Two lessons we should have learned in the GWOT: 1. If you stay within reach of the enemy, they will adapt and ultimately win the long war by grinding us down. Iran is doing this on a massive scale with ballistic missiles, air defenses, and drones—the same concept as IEDs, just more advanced. 2. Attacking a nation will rally the people around the regime we’re trying to overthrow, or around forces far worse. Regime change is a fool’s errand.

The issue with therapy speak is it can be used as a lazy way to tell the audience a character had flaws and are not infallible, but they're the protagonist and that it's okay to have flaws. Just like the audience! Meanwhile here, it's two actual characters talking to each other.
Possum Reviews@ReviewsPossum

You know that scene in Shrek where he confesses to Donkey his insecurity about how being ugly makes him see himself as undeserving of companionship, and that he acts like a monster because people treat him like one? Did you notice that scene doesn't have any therapy speak?

@jackunheard All Trump has to do is take Iran's promise not to develop a nuclear weapon as a "win" and GTFO of the region. We've done enough economic damage and had enough damage done to our bases. Enough is enough. We still haven't even felt the effects yet, but this summer, we will.

@JosephKahn I moved to LA in 2006 and I feel like I caught the tail end of something, but once we got to the 2010s there was definitely a vibe shift. Especially after Trump got elected. This town feels far more about politics and opposition than creativity.

The problem with LA is the "Everything's Fine" people. These are people that came to LA after its heyday and during its decline after the financial crash of 2008. The more recent the transplant, the less they are aware of what Los Angeles used to be. They have no idea all the areas that used to be lively, or that there was a world class music and night life scene. If you mention there weren't homeless people shitting on the streets everywhere, they call you a MAGA fascist because unhoused people have rights too and Everything's Fine. If you mention entire neighborhoods like the Pacific Palisades did not burn down, they say you should not be blaming the mayor for the weather (which is controlled by global warming Republicans) and Everything's Fine. You can say it's really not normal for so many shops to be closed all over Los Angeles with empty storefronts, and they'll say something about equity and that Everything's Fine. The street vendors on sidewalks in front of KoreaTown restaurants that are shutting down? That's totally fine because that's LA culture (no it fucking isn't newbie). Crime? Everything's Fine. These theater kid transplants from Michigan say why are you complaining, move somewhere else. They don't know what they don't know. Then they drink a $20 Erewhon smoothie thinking that's the height of LA culture. Everything's Fine.

Elon Musk’s “baby mama” Ashley St. Clair is accusing Elon Musk of rigging the 2024 election using lasers, satellites, and space technology. She says she has a dead man’s switch if anything happens to her. “In October, Elon told me he was ready to release his ‘anomaly in the matrix.’” “He said he has 10K lasers in space,” referring to his satellites. “This is not a piece they’ll see on the chess board.”

@MarioNawfal "And the same 5 studios still make the movies everyone watches." Yet everyone isn't watching movies as much as they used to, which is where AI will become the great equalizer, because there are people shut out of entertainment who could otherwise make a creative difference.

The CEO of Take-Two, the company behind GTA, just said something the entire AI industry doesn't want to hear. And he said it without being anti-AI. Strauss Zelnick's argument is precise. AI is built on datasets. Datasets are backward-looking. Creativity is forward-looking. A model trained on everything that already exists cannot, by definition, produce something genuinely unexpected. And all hits, by their very nature, are unexpected. Asset creation and hit creation are not the same thing. AI is getting very good at the first one. The second one is what actually makes money, builds franchises, and changes culture. Nobody has shown AI can do that yet. The derivative property problem is real. You can clone GTA with existing technology. You could do it before AI. It would take 3 years and look identical. It still wouldn't sell. Because it isn't GTA. It's a clone of GTA. And consumers, despite what the industry occasionally pretends, can feel the difference between something genuinely new and something assembled from the residue of things that already worked. Thousands of mobile games ship every year. 0 to 5 hits get made. The same studios make them every time. The technology to make more games has been commoditized for years. It didn't democratize hit creation. It just flooded the market with more forgettable product. The Silicon Valley thesis that AI unlocks game creation for everyone is true in the same way that cheap cameras unlocked filmmaking for everyone. They did. And the same 5 studios still make the movies everyone watches. What Zelnick is saying, without quite saying it, is that the thing AI cannot replicate is taste. The instinct for what hasn't been done yet. The cultural antenna that detects the gap in the market before the data can see it. Data tells you what people wanted. Hits tell people what they want next. Those are different jobs.
Mario Nawfal@MarioNawfal

🇺🇸 Tucker lays out the deepest critique of AI yet, and it's not about jobs... His argument: writing produces thinking. You can't formulate a thought without first articulating it. If kids never write because AI writes for them, the quality of human thinking collapses. That's the surface problem. The deeper one is purpose: "The point of living is to create. That's the point of being a human being. It's necessary for joy. There is no joy without creation." If the machine creates everything and humans just consume, you don't get utopia. You get despair, mass unemployment, and eventually political revolution.

@LauraPowellEsq "There’s many people that have a deep understanding of what it would look like if Democrats were locked out" This is actually a terrifying statement. Republicans don't have this luxury and he can openly talk about how his side can deal with it while Republicans are shut out.

When asked about the possibility of ending up with two Republican candidates for governor and no Democrats, Gavin Newsom responded: “We all have agencies. We can shape the future… I don’t anticipate this need to be the case, but there is a ‘break the glass scenario.’ There’s many people that have a deep understanding of what it would look like if Democrats were locked out, and we’re going to do everything to make sure that doesn’t happen. I’ll leave it there.” It would be nice if he gave a hint about what lengths he intends to go to in order to ensure a Democrat wins. 🤨
