The biggest thing baseball taught me: It’s life in a uniform. Good days, bad days, and everything in between. Let go of what you can’t control. And commit to what you can. Your effort, attitude and response to failures will continue to shape who you are. So keep stacking days.

We do need to make major improvements in literacy. Period. But it’s becoming clear that targeted supports can work, and 3rd grade retention is not a necessary condition to making those improvements. It may even harm kids later in life.

Rick Pitino was asked what stops people from being great. His answer was one word. "Ego stops greatness. I call it edging greatness out." "In a spiritual sense, ego is edging God out. But ego is edging greatness out." And he made a key distinction: "I'm not talking about confidence. You have to be a confident person." "But ego really gets you to where you think you've arrived. You think you know it all. You stop learning. You stop listening." That's the trap. Confidence keeps you hungry. Ego convinces you that you've already made it. You lose your hunger and humility. High school basketball isn’t about flashy plays or highlight reels. It’s about: - Defending like your life depends on it. - Making the extra pass every time. - Sacrificing for the guy next to you.

PLAYERS: If you are the most talented player on your team, you should also be hardest worker on the team. Lead by example. Set the standard. Be the standard.

Everything I'm reading from college coaches is great stuff, but what's not being said, is that it’s no longer college basketball. It's professional basketball with budgets that rival the Euroleague. So pros have trade deadlines. The G league is way below college basketball on a pay scale. Even two way players are way below. Unfortunately the game I've been in for over 40 years no longer exists.
