the "loneliness of the strongest" theme is just not really an interesting one. the reason why it works in mob isn't just because one can actually write compelling characters, it's because mob treats the desire for and indulgence in power as emotionally stunting.

Random side note: Whenever people compare Twin Peaks to Umineko on here (and it happens often) I get so autistically offended by it. Twin Peaks is aeons above the quality of Umineko, and the similarities are surface level at best, plus meta fiction has been in Japanese fiction

The simplicity of protagonists with simple goals like Ichigo wanting to protect others, Yuji wanting to help others, Denji wanting a quick shag, Deku wanting to become the no. 1 hero etc are all far more interesting than the highly ambitious goals because they feel more personal

@LadySuzuhaya0 @moriartyyh I don't think Friend's story is confusing. It's more like an awful retcon (if you include 21st Century Boys). I think Urasawa really messed up the ending. But even so, 20th Century Boys is one of my favorite mangas. So I just ignore the problem about his identity.
