Some of us were outside when Pac (Death Row/West Coast) and Big (Bad Boy/East Coast) had the most notorious beef in the history of mainstream Hip-Hop. And guess what… they were still playing Pac’s ‘All Eyez on Me’ on the East Coast, and Biggie’s ‘Going Back to Cali’ was in power rotation on every radio station and bangin’ in all the clubs on the West Coast. But that beef was during an era where music was being consumed and debated OUTSIDE. It was in clubs, cars, barbershops, and backyard barbecues. It was public, not private. Today… “The Culture” is largely INSIDE and ONLINE. It’s no longer social, it’s navigated through social media and podcasts pushing payola-like propaganda. Folks choosing sides, not because of what’s dope, they’re choosing sides for clickbait and creating content.
