@DrewLDickerson It's a fun thought, but I don't think it does justice to his craft. His late style had begun to emerge well before he used an amanuensis, and it's very much a reflection of his aesthetic commitments and ideas about consciousness.

Good, bad, or indifferent, it remains very funny that Henry James’s late style has everything to do with the fact that he began dictating to typewriter

@DrewLDickerson proto-modernism was ultimately about senescence, cultural and biophysical

@DrewLDickerson returning to highly abstract contrapuntal writing was form of compensation. he also held a rod between his teeth and stuck the other end to the soundboard so the vibrations could pass through his jawbone into his inner ear

@writingenjoyer Yes! “Our writing tools are also working on our thoughts” he writes (types?) in a letter to Peter Gast

And got kind of tripped out when the amanuensis he was working with on “The Turn of the Screw” didn’t seem scared enough

As in, he was never really in a position to decide on what all these subordinated clauses are doing any more than his readers

I genuinely think writers over 40 don’t realize how bad things are for those younger than them. There’s a fundamental disconnect happening here in terms of not only rates but networking, practical knowledge, and things like housing costs and debt. Two ships passing in the night.

Other than the Golden Bough stuff going on in V. I see a ton of daylight between these two

@attheimax Sorry to hear it! My interests also circle around reification and utopia in post-45 stuff—would be super interested to hear about the project I’d it’s something you’re talking about

@DrewLDickerson that’s very kind of you; i was so bummed not to make it. had a bunch of financial stuff that prevented it, and probably will miss berkeley for the same reason this year sadly

There's a great China Mieville essay on "your" i.e. China/the reader's creating a canon of repudiated works: "...it was his own damning of it that led you to Harold Bloom's novel The Flight to Lucifer, and you are glad that he could not, as he had wished, burn evey copy."
Eric T. Racher@Eric_T_Racher

Since Bloom is making the rounds, here's one of my favorites, in Time, on The Flight to Lucifer: "I had to pay the publisher not to have a second printing of the paperback. If I could go around and get rid of all the surviving copies, I would."

What I always remember of The Tunnel is Gass’s reworking of Rilke’s Book of Hours as bathroom limericks
