Hi all- taking a long break as want to get back to reading/ other projects. It has been an interesting time and I have really needed to follow the politics recently, but time to breathe and think and read for a bit. I am finding it addictive (says the addictions doc!).Bye xx

@CossinsJudith @dignityindying For me , choice/ autonomy is not the definition of dignity and suffering and illness and disability do not render a person undignified. Dignity is about love, care, connection and memory.

@CossinsJudith @dignityindying It was an important time for us, I was chatting to my Dad about it the other day. It helped our grief. The love and commitment my Dad showed during that time was one of the most beautiful and dignified things I have witnessed. I will care for him the same way if he needs me to.

Today I voted for the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill. As a new MP, being part of this process has been incredibly emotional and at times overwhelming. It was a privilege to sit on the Bill Committee and hear the powerful evidence that shaped this legislation. 1/4

@DrugsDocRT @maggie_lavan @tomgordonLD There’s a lot more I could talk about mum’s last few weeks under the care of the NHS. Scans that came back no signs of cancer to 3 weeks later scan showing aggressive cancer and dead the following week. As an ex-nurse, I despair at what the NHS has become in certain areas.

@maggie_lavan @DrugsDocRT @tomgordonLD We were asked to sign for funding for Fast Track Palliative Care for my mum last September but warned it would not arrive in time. She died a few days after on a general ward in lots of pain. No dignity and little pain relief.

@jenstirrup @AngelaTilby @churchofengland The church of England, not being brave and clear on important issues but being all ' all things bright and beautiful ' to keep everyone happy- bland and inoffensive . Vanilla.

@LindaBr31456660 @lewis_goodall I am not , the law already exists that assisting a suicide is unlawful . Already there. I have just as much right as you or anyone else to argue for my side of a debate. With palliative care being actively de-funded, I won't have the wonderful choice you think I will have.

I note how “respect” in the assisted dying/abortion debates, online at least, seems often only to flow one way.

Without a hint of irony or self-awareness, the @ChurchofEngland has decided to launch a campaign called - yes, wait for it - #GreatAndSmall - aimed at celebrating all creatures great and small. Apparently, "Great and Small" does not include the unborn or those people faced with terrible choices when they are at their most vulnerable. Cue pictures of swift boxes in Church rooves instead....... You could not make it up. x.com/churchofenglan…

@maggie_lavan @tomgordonLD Oh that is appalling. There isn't going to be 'choice' then is there? So sorry, that is way too much to ask the charity sector to do

@DrugsDocRT @tomgordonLD My local hospice received formal notification from the NHS Trust in November 2024 that the £400,000 Fast Track Funding it usually receives was being withdrawn. It was withdrawn in April.

@HelenMagi @JakeBenRichards @jackabbott90 Totally unedifying and looks very tactical. Virtually every safeguard defeated by same margin with very few exceptions. It looked rigged, was it ? Can you say honestly that you weren't told to do a tactical no vote at 2nd reading in order to make the committee look balanced?

My friend @jackabbott90 voted against the Assisted Dying Bill at 2nd Reading. Jack was then on the Bill committee - looking at the detail for almost 100 hours. He had concerns about safeguarding, but has been reassured. He is supporting the Bill tomorrow.
LabourList@LabourList

With MPs voting tomorrow on the third reading of the assisted dying bill, our tracker currently forecasts 221 Labour MPs to back the bill, with 156 against labourlist.org/2025/06/assist…

@maggie_lavan @tomgordonLD Have you got evidence for this already happening. Hospices are already largely charitably funded and only get a small amount of state funding. The rise in NI contributions has been a problem but I didn't know further cuts had been made

@AlexanderHorne1 @yuanyi_z Suboptimal! Very Barristery language . In my line of work (I work for a drug and alcohol service as GP specialising in addictions) , we have much clearer language for that dodgy and unfair dealing. Not words I would share on here. There should be an investigation that rigging

This is not a manifesto bill. This is not a money bill. This is not a bill which the House of Commons has passed twice in two consecutive sessions. Peers have the absolute constitutional right to reject it.
Matthew Povey@mattpovey

@yuanyi_z any chance of this? It's not Government policy. Is this a moment where it could step-up?

@AlexanderHorne1 @yuanyi_z Also the unedifying debacle of the repeated 15:8 rejections of safeguards in committee stage. Utterly rigged towards supporters. Even one of the MPs who voted no at 2nd reading and got on committee on the basis of balance voted with the sponsor against most of safeguards. Dodgy

@AlexanderHorne1 @yuanyi_z I totally disagree with you on the democratic mandate when this has been a conscience vote on a private members bill. My own MP did not represent me or many like me who wrote to him to beg him to reject the bill. He basically said I had no right to impose my view on him (my MP!)
