I can personally confirm that New Jersey is the 49th worst place to live: After a decade and a half of living in Asia, I came back to live in the U.S. for a time (I'm now back in Hong Kong); my investment firm's headquarters is in Manhattan.... So, I thought I'd buy a house (I never owned one) and commute—enjoying the tranquility of suburbia. I bought a beautiful, high-end home in upscale (North) Bergen County off a nature reserve. After one year of ultra-high taxes (over $20,000 per year), a corrupt HOA board which cost me $700 per month; money that only went to the board members' homes (seasonal flower plantings outside homes, etc.)... I sold the house for a profit, moved to a pre-war rental apartment with a working fireplace in Sutton Place on the eastside of Manhattan, and bought a Florida gated community waterfront home (which I visit two months for annual home leave). Yes, I can attest... New Jersey truly sucks.
