@ElenaMHenshaw @nateobrienn Yeah, there were some concerns about the feeding increasing deer populations, and the communal bait stations becoming vectors spreading diseases like CWD. Still seems worth investigating but I don't think they've been used since a few test sites in the early 2000s.

@Principal_Jon If you have an old treadmill, the motor from there would work better. Fully variable speed control and most old ones can run on DC. Washing machine motor works best at 2 or 3 fixed speeds only by switching windings, but it might be good enough using a long extension cord.

We bought a new washing machine. So we gave our old one to my 10 yo and his friends to tear apart. They want to build a car with the motor if they can. This is education.

@travis4nh Bern's calculation of Elon's tax rate is highly disingenuous as well. It includes their theoretical taxes on wealth and unrealized gains. Unfortunately most people nodding along are too ill informed to know what that means.

@ewarren If all you want everyone to pitch in 2 pennies and it does all that I'm for it. Unless we're just dropping the "per" off "percent" to make a tax sound more palatable now?

A two-cent wealth tax on ultra-millionaires would: Deliver universal child care, Build millions of homes, Expand Medicare, Provide paid family leave, Fund tuition-free public college, and so, so much more.

@StatisticUrban @sethharpesq Some comments on it being shutdown... I believe because the cost and maintenance dramatically exceed modern PV and the focused energy was roasting birds to death at an alarming rate. I can't say if China has overcome these issues but I'd be skeptical.

To the immiserated proles of the Epstein Empire, this doesn't even look real. In the United States, "advanced" technology is a bumbling Waymo that won't get out of the way, or the Unit 8200 app that scans your face at the airport.

China’s solar power plant in Dunhuang uses around 12,000 mirrors to focus sunlight onto a central tower, heating molten salt to extreme temperatures. That heat is stored and used to generate electricity on demand, including after sunset.

You Can't Make This Up: To prevent fraud, the state of Connecticut passed an emergency bill, SB 299, introduced by Democratic leaders and signed into law by Governor Ned Lamont (D) on March 3, 2026 which requires a copy of a driver's license when redeeming >1,000 cans or bottles in a single day at bottle redemption centers. This measure aims to prevent fraudulent actions, particularly by out-of-state residents crossing borders to exploit Connecticut's higher 10-cent deposit refund rate (compared to 5 cents in neighboring states), which was reportedly costing the state revenue.

BREAKING: Microsoft just announced several major changes to Windows 11 in an effort to win back user trust and evolve the platform into something people will actually want to use over macOS and Linux! It's a huge announcement that addresses Windows 11's biggest problems today, tackling core fundamental issues such as unreliable system performance, UX consistency, AI bloat and general enshittification. Microsoft has confirmed that this year, it WILL be reducing where ads and Copilot appear throughout the system, including in Start, Widgets, Notepad, Photos, and more! File Explorer and Windows Search will be upgraded with improved performance and capabilities that make finding apps and files much faster and easier. The OS will become lighter with less RAM and system utilization at idle, making it smoother to run on low end hardware with limited memory. These improvements will also benefit high-end PCs too. Windows Update will be improved with more granular controls and the ability to postpone updates for longer, along with reducing how often the OS needs to restart to install an update. Microsoft has also confirmed that it's bringing back fan favourite features such as the ability to move the Taskbar! It's also working to update more areas of the system shell with modern WinUI designs, which should make Windows 11 feel more coherent and complete. There's much more in the announcement, and it honestly all sounds too good to be true. Microsoft really is listening to feedback, and is eager to make Windows the BEST desktop OS on the market. More details including when these changes will arrive in the link! windowscentral.com/microsoft/wind…

I’ve always wondered about the possibility of a “pulsed” computer. That is, a computer so dense, either due to thermal or electrical limits, it can’t be run continuously. Kind of like a camera flash, intense burst, then a recovery period. Turns out, it sorta exists.

America has enacted some laws that are just mindnumbingly stupid. You really have to wonder how anyone thought it was a good idea to allow this: 'I want to open a McDonald's!' 'Sorry, the local Burger King said that's not necessary.'
Crémieux@cremieuxrecueil

What you see here is called "lying" It's what happens when someone's anti-competitive protections are under attack CON laws are insane. Basically: If you want to open a new medical practice somewhere, you have to get your potential competitors to sign off, saying you're needed
