For many years, the burden of keeping a home was placed on the shoulders of women only. If a man cheats on his wife, society will blame the woman: “Nah, you make your husband look outside.” Women were given so many tips to stop their husbands from cheating: “Wear bum shorts whenever he’s around,” “Make sure he eats before he eats,” “Pound yam for him,” “Cook him his favorite meal,” “Give him a male child” (as if we can decide that). The list is long. Women did this and still got cheated on. Many men turned their wives into laughing stocks in the community by sleeping with little girls around, and those girls would in turn lose respect for the wives. Some women settled for “As long as he takes care of the children, I’m okay.” Many men destabilized their wives financially, made them quit their jobs, and ensured they had no other source of income so he could be God over her and even if she decides to leave, she can’t stand on her own. But I’m glad my generation will be different. There are men and women who don’t cheat. Nobody is polygamous in nature.

You people piss me off real bad. Marriage is supposed to be a partnership, not some leadership competition. What’s this obsession with being “the leader” in your marriage? If you desperately want to lead, go join boys scout or something. That mindset is exactly why some of y’all feel threatened the moment a woman starts doing better financially. Instead of building together, it turns into ego, insecurity, and power struggle. Weird.
