it’s insane how most modern software feels slower than software from 15 years ago despite hardware becoming unimaginably faster. most of the extra performance gains now get eaten by layers of abstractions, bloated frameworks, telemetry, background services, and apps trying to behave like entire operating systems instead of simple tools

We need to eliminate the incentive to write useless, cluttering, time wasting, self promoting papers. It starts with cutting accademia PhD milling machine. I was not a supporter but now the y option is massive downsizing and consolidation of academia with an accountability feedback in term of actual problems solved. Do not jump. Good K12 teachers is an invaluable product and a big problem that we need to solve, so I am not for throwing the baby with the dirty water. But this system is no longer a nuisance: it is a damaging actor in our society

Hallucinated citations are the brown M&Ms of AI slop papers. If you ban the easiest-to-detect failure modes, you don’t eliminate slop, you just select for slop sophisticated enough to evade the filter.

I challenged myself to build a lathe with 1 th alignment for $100. Last night achieved it after about a year of work with basic tools. But feel like cheating on the bearings…. I did buy those. So far I am still under $100 in material but it was all scrap I already had. Once I have a lathe at 1 th the process toward accuracy is started.

Many underestimate how wise are the US people at the ballot box. I may be wrong, but I live in the heartland of US, all the families I know have or had military connection. They do not vote straight tickets, they assess the outcome of their choices because their livelihood depends on them. They are witnessing the change, the big one, the one that removes most of the oil from the economic equation and see the alternative. No body bags, $1 more at the pump, time to get serous about finally getting rid of the gas guzzler. Solar and batteries are making into the farmland because there is no alternative. Plenty of Persians in our communities too. They are very well integrated and their opinion carries weight. They are not in the street protecting the killers of their relatives, the young one sent to hanging. We have been at war with IRGC for 76 years… do not forget this.

Thank you for this comment. I have been wondering how to stop the madness of papers cluttering every field and PhD milling factories nowadays called universities. Well, maybe the answer, like you just stated, was right in front of our eyes: comoditazion of papers and PhD causes a mass inflation. Universities may be in for a massive restructuring and consolidation round

A bitter pill to swallow: In this new era of AI, research papers alone will be doubted more. People will assume AI helped with the idea, the proof, or the derivation unless they can see it run

FYI: collapsible batons are much cheaper than guns, don’t need licensure and are a lot less of an escalation simply to draw but are scary enough to deter and extend your reach by >1’ if not. I got my Smith & Wesson for $50. Break their legs and run! (Check legality in your area.)
