For two thousand years the settled treatment for almost any illness was to open a vein and drain the patient. In 1799 it helped see off George Washington. 1847: Semmelweis showed handwashing took childbed deaths from one in six to almost none. Insulted, his colleagues ran him out, and he died in an asylum. 1900s: they sold radium as a health tonic and fitted children's shoes by X-ray in the shop. Then the jaws and the feet started to rot. 1949: they gave the Nobel Prize in Medicine to the lobotomy. A decade later it was a byword for butchery. 1950s: they prescribed thalidomide to pregnant women and swore it was gentle. Then the babies arrived. 1960s: they whipped out millions of children's tonsils on sight. Then they checked, found most never needed it, and stopped. Every one of those was the settled science of its day. The journals, the committees, the experts, and a special contempt for the doubters. Every one moved. So look at what carries that same certainty now. A statin for every middle-aged adult. An acid blocker for life. An antidepressant in a ten-minute slot. A weight-loss jab you must never come off. All of it said in the same confident voice. Backed by the same kind of committee. The doubters have a better track record than the consensus does. They always have.

It’s reported that at his new accommodation Rudakubana ‘will have access to a state of the art gym, an on-site cafe and shop and even the hospital’s resident hairdresser and dentist.’ Those held there are ‘allowed to watch TVs with Freeview packages plus vetted DvDs.’ The Sun reports inmates are ‘encouraged to spend time outdoors, including on escorted walks around the Berskhire facility’s lush central gardens.’ Rudakubana ‘will also be encouraged to join woodwork and pottery worskhops and join educational classes if safe to do so.’ There is an answer. A simpler, cheaper and much fairer answer. Hang him. A Restore Britain Government will give the British people a referendum on reintroducing the death penalty. That evil scumbag Rudakubana will be first up.

Burnham Handed the Hamas File to a Hamas Sympathiser In March 2010, Andy Slaughter wrote in The Guardian that Britain should negotiate "without preconditions" with Hamas. He had just returned from an undeclared trip to Gaza, where he says he met Faraj al-Ghoul, then Hamas's justice minister, and Dr Ahmed Yousef, deputy foreign minister and right-hand man to Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. No entry for that trip appears in his register of members' interests, despite parliamentary rules at the time requiring declaration of benefits over £660. Eight months later he was in Jerusalem with Jeremy Corbyn, photographed alongside three men with documented Hamas affiliations, on a £927 trip funded by Friends of Al-Aqsa and Middle East Monitor. One of the trip's sponsors, Ismail Patel, had told a rally the year before that Hamas was "no terrorist organisation" and that he saluted it for standing up to Israel. None of this is a single embarrassing photograph. It is a documented, repeated position, held over years, argued in Slaughter's own byline, and never retracted. In November 2023, Slaughter resigned as Shadow Solicitor General, voting for an SNP amendment demanding an immediate Gaza ceasefire against Starmer's explicit instruction. That is the same portfolio, in shadow form, that Andy Burnham has now handed him in government. He is one of two law officers with statutory input into prosecution decisions and proscription advice, in a country where Hamas has been a proscribed organisation since 2001 and supporting it carries up to fourteen years in prison. Nick Timothy has called the appointment a disgrace. He is right, but the word undersells the structure of the problem. This is not a man who once held an unfashionable opinion. It is a man promoted by into the single office where that opinion has legal consequence, over the very organisation his opinion concerned. The pattern is not new. Jonathan Powell ran a secret backchannel to Hayat Tahrir al-Sham while it was still proscribed, and was never required to disclose it before becoming Starmer's national security adviser. Lord Alli held personal talks with Assad at the height of the Syrian civil war and was given the run of Downing Street from day one, the access itself never properly explained. In each case the sequence is identical. A relationship with a hostile or proscribed actor precedes the appointment. The appointment follows without the relationship being weighed against the role. The explanation, when one comes, is always that the individual's judgement should be trusted regardless of the record. The Attorney General's office says Slaughter has been "consistent in condemning the actions of Hamas" and supports a two-state solution. That form of words does not address the specific claim under scrutiny, which is not whether he condemns Hamas's actions in the abstract, but whether a man who argued for negotiating with it without preconditions should hold the pen on decisions about prosecuting people connected to it. Governments are entitled to appoint MPs with a range of views on the Middle East. What they are not entitled to do is place someone with a public, years-long, undeclared-travel-supported record of sympathy for a proscribed organisation into the one office built to decide how the law treats that organisation, and then describe the appointment as a matter of impartiality. Burnham did not inherit this decision. He made it, in his first week, with the full history available to read. "Andy Burnham and Andy Slaughter, the Solicitor General he chose to hand the Hamas file to."

So State pensioners will be protected from paying income tax only if their sole income is supplied by DWP. Those who actually worked and contributed to an occupational pension, as Governments demanded, will not be protected from income tax raids. Something wrong here....

Rayner's £182,000 Masterclass In Hypocrisy Angela Rayner spent years telling the country that MPs' second jobs were a racket. In March 2023 she wrote that being an MP "isn't a second job. It is the job." Labour, she promised, would put an end to the practice. Eighteen months later she resigned from Cabinet in disgrace over her own financial affairs. Within a year she had earned £182,376 from speeches, book advances and a severance payment she had no obligation to keep. Then she walked straight back into the job she had left. The figures are not subtle. She earned £104,000 from speaking fees in ten months, on top of an MP's salary that rose to £98,599 in April. She took £61,500 as a book advance for a memoir about her own life. She kept a £16,876 exit payment while Wes Streeting, reappointed to Cabinet the same week, is serving his first three months for nothing. One fee stands apart from the rest. Propertymark, a trade body representing the property sector, paid Rayner £20,000 for a two-hour speaking engagement. That is £10,000 an hour, from an industry lobby group, paid to a former Housing Secretary weeks before she was reappointed Housing Secretary. Nobody pays that rate for after-dinner charm. They pay it for access, and they got exactly what they paid for. This is not a speaking fee. It is a retainer with a lectern attached. The woman collecting these cheques left the department with a housebuilding record to be ashamed of. Official figures published by the Ministry of Housing in November show England delivered 208,600 net additional dwellings in 2024-25, a fall of 6 per cent on the year before. New build completions dropped from 198,610 to 190,600. Labour's manifesto promised 1.5 million homes over the Parliament, a rate of 300,000 a year. Rayner delivered barely two-thirds of that. Housebuilding did not accelerate under her stewardship. It slowed. She has an answer ready for all of it. The severance payment was earned, she told BBC Radio 5 Live, because she had genuinely left government for a period of time. That defence collapses under its own logic. The payment exists to cushion ministers against sudden unemployment. Rayner was not unemployed. She was the best-paid backbencher in Britain, drawing more from four speeches than most of her constituents earn in three years. Joanna Marchong of the think tank Onward put it plainly: Rayner built her brand attacking Tory sleaze and demanding a ban on MPs' outside earnings, then pocketed £180,000 the moment the rules stopped applying to her. Lee Anderson called her year out a good little earner. Both are right, and neither goes far enough. The deeper failure sits in the housing numbers, where the gap between rhetoric and delivery is measured not in pounds but in homes that were never built. Labour came to power promising a government that would look different from what came before it. Rayner's year off shows how quickly that promise curdles into the same old story: rules for the public, exemptions for the powerful, and a lobby group's cheque book standing in for genuine accountability. She missed her housing target by a third and was rewarded with reappointment. She broke her own stated principle on second jobs and was rewarded with £182,376. The voters who elected this government on a promise of change deserve to know that the change stopped at the Cabinet door. Axel Rudakubana, who murdered little girls in Southport has been moved from prison to a psychiatric hospital after an assessment by psychiatrists. He was transferred to Broadmoor high-security hospital from the category A prison Belmarsh this week after it was concluded that he "could not be managed safely in a prison environment". Costs for patients in hospital secure units are more than £300,000 each a year, compared with about £60,000 for prisoners. The worst creatures on our land are being treat as patients instead of prisoners, and the taxpayer are funding it!
