CHETTER DISPATCH โ€“ EDITION 0202 March 31, 2026 LAPPY & THE RAINBOW BRIDGE โ€“ THE DAY THE HOUSE GREW QUIET AGAIN ๐ŸŒˆ Three weeks ago, yesterday, I wrote about saying goodbye to Shy Boy. I thought that kind of heartbreak only comes once in a while. I was wrong. Yesterday, we lost Lappy. His twin brother. His shadow. His lifelong partner in everything. Yin and Yang. Ping and Pong. And just like that, a house that once had three little heartbeats now has one. Lappy wasโ€ฆ different. Where Shy Boy was shy, Lappy was joy in motion. He was everywhere, all at once. Talking, exploring, checking on everyone like it was his full-time job. He didnโ€™t just live in our home. He filled it. For 24 years, I never saw him snarl or hiss. Not once. Not a bad day. Not a bad mood. Just love, curiosity, and that constant gentle presence that made everything feel okay. Yesterday morning, he was still Lappy. Running around. Meowing. Chasing pigeons off the patio like it was just another day in his long, beautiful life. And thenโ€ฆ everything changed. A massive stroke. Out of nowhere. Within hours, he couldnโ€™t stand. Couldnโ€™t balance. Couldnโ€™t be the little soul he had always been. After 24 years of energy and routine, it felt impossible. I thought we had more time. I really did. Thatโ€™s the part that gets you. Not just the lossโ€ฆ but the shock of it. Lappy and Shy Boy were never meant to be apart. They came into this world together, and now, within weeks, theyโ€™ve left it the same way. And I believe this with everything in meโ€ฆ Shy Boy was there waiting for him. Somewhere beyond what we can see, those two found each other again. No pain. No confusion. Just two brothers, reunited, like no time had passed at all. Back here, thoughโ€ฆ itโ€™s quiet. Sissy, our princess and last remaining kitty feels it. We all do. Sheโ€™s walking through the house differently now. Looking for them. And it breaks your heart all over again because you realizeโ€ฆ they werenโ€™t just pets. They were family. They were routine. They were comfort. They were love in its purest, most consistent form. So, hear me when I say this to every single person reading: Love your fur babies. Spoil them. Hold them. Talk to them like they understand every word, because maybe they do. Because one dayโ€ฆ the house gets quiet. And you would give anything just to hear one more meow, one more set of paws across the floor, one more moment of their unconditional love. Lappy and Shy Boy gave us 24 years of memories. 24 years of laughter, companionship, and a kind of love that asks for nothing and gives everything. That kind of love doesnโ€™t leave. It just changes form. Until next time, Chetter @ChetterHub One voice. One dispatch. One message: Love them while you can. Because when they go, they take a piece of you with themโ€ฆ and leave behind a lifetime of love in its place.

My baby sister has full blown sickle cell, and this is a glimmer of hope that one day sheโ€™ll be free of this painful disease. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿพ
Massimo@Rainmaker1973

A 21-year-old man from Long Island has made medical history as the first person in New York State to be cured of sickle cell disease. Sickle cell disease is a painful genetic disorder in which red blood cells become rigid, crescent-shaped, and prone to clumping. These deformed cells block blood vessels, triggering intense pain crises, organ damage, strokes, and a significantly reduced life expectancy. The condition affects approximately 100,000 people in the United States. The breakthrough treatment, called Lyfgenia (lovotibeglogene autotemcel), is a one-time gene therapy developed by bluebird bio. The process begins by collecting the patientโ€™s own bone marrow stem cells. In the laboratory, scientists use a lentiviral vector to insert a functional gene that enables the production of healthy hemoglobin. After the patient undergoes chemotherapy to eliminate the faulty cells, the genetically modified stem cells are infused back into the body. Once engrafted, these corrected cells start producing normal, flexible red blood cells that flow smoothly through blood vessels without causing blockages. For Sebastien Beauzile, who had lived with severe sickle cell disease for over two decades, the results were transformative. Chronic pain that had defined much of his life vanished, and his blood parameters normalized. Doctors now consider him cured. While the therapy is complex, requires intensive preparation, and remains extremely expensive, it represents a major shift in how sickle cell disease is approached โ€” moving from lifelong symptom management to a potential one-time curative solution. As more patients gain access, Lyfgenia and similar gene therapies could offer hope for a future where sickle cell is no longer a lifelong burden. This milestone at Cohen Childrenโ€™s Medical Center marks an important step forward in genetic medicine and personalized cures.

He drives a school bus in Dallas, Texas. But the kids on his route call him something else โ€” Dad. Every morning before the sun is fully up, Curtis Jenkins pulls his yellow school bus to the curb and waits. Not just to pick up kids. To see them. For seven years, Curtis noticed things other people missed. The little girl who folded her paper lunch bag perfectly every day but left it on the bus โ€” because there was nothing inside. The boy whose shoes were too small. The kids who got on quiet, eyes down, carrying weight no child should have to carry alone. So Curtis did something simple. He made his bus a community. He gave every child a job โ€” a greeter, an assistant, a "police officer" keeping order in the aisles. Every morning he'd call out, "We're going to care about each other and love everybody, right?" And 50 small voices would answer back. But it didn't stop there. Over the years, Curtis spent thousands of dollars of his own money โ€” money he saved by skipping his own Christmas gifts with his wife โ€” on birthday cards, bikes, backpacks, turkeys at Thanksgiving, and 70 hand-wrapped Christmas presents. He didn't buy random gifts. He asked each child what they wanted. Then he went and got exactly that. No donation page. No announcement. No cameras. When the story finally got out and people questioned how a bus driver could afford it, Curtis just smiled. "It doesn't take money. It takes discipline." But here's the part that will stay with you. When a reporter asked the kids what they loved most about Curtis โ€” not one of them mentioned the gifts. A fifth grader named Ethan, whose parents had divorced when he was four, looked up and said quietly: "He's the father that I always wanted. In some ways, I wish my dad could have been like that." Curtis heard it. Didn't flinch. Just nodded. "That's the paycheck right there," he said later. "If I can get that, you can keep the money." He wasn't looking for a medal. He wasn't going viral on purpose. He was just a man who decided, every single morning, that his bus would be the safest place those kids walked into all day. Sometimes the person who changes a child's life forever isn't a teacher or a coach or a counselor. Sometimes it's the person behind the wheel of a yellow bus at 7 a.m. โ€” who chose to show up, and chose to care, when nobody was asking him to. Tag someone who needs to read this today. ๐Ÿ’›
