i feel guilty about the fact this is selfish and bitchy of me, but i just realized my MIL is gonna be with us in Japan on mother’s day and i feel resentful that i have to share my first mother’s day with her. i am grateful to her for raising my fiancé and would want her to feel remembered, but i feel like there’s been no space in our lives lately for me to have anything nice and i would have appreciated having that day without also having to make it about her.

@dundereloise I think stuff like this sneaks into home recipes from restaurant scale prep. Might have different results if you were browning 10lb of mushrooms . restaurant recipes are also the reason why every online hollandaise recipe is bogus

@Romy_Holland I worry about the same thing. baseline I think kids just get way less attunement than was present in a tribey ancestral environment. now parents are load bearing in ways that feel kinda impossible to fully resolve. it motivates me to get a village together.

yep, parental love/approval! my mom is super achievement-oriented and not very warm or affirming. my siblings who were the lowest achievers have huge complexes now about trying to prove they are as good as the others, even though we're all in our 30s and these metrics don't make sense anymore. I definitely think a lot about making sure I avoid this dynamic (my mom did pretty blatantly bad things to create it so it doesn't seem too hard) but I think there's a chance I'd overlook some other source of scarcity. like if I end up having a lot of kids attention could be scarce.

sibling rivalry seems inevitable and a small amount is probably a positive, but it was such a damaging part of my family's culture that I really want to find a way to minimize it among my kids. I think two of my siblings internalized a sense of competition so deeply that they're now actively rooting for the rest of us to fail so that they'll feel better about themselves. the idea my kids would end up like this horrifies me, but I'm not sure the best way to avoid it. one idea is to reward the entire family when anyone succeeds, but I wonder if this would backfire somehow. maybe I'm overthinking it and in the absence of explicitly bad messaging the natural dynamic would be fine?

i’m not a clean person and i am still horrified by the daily ritual of shoveling purées into my sons mouth with the full knowledge he’s going to spit 97% of it onto his chin, where it will then drip onto his highchair tray so he can mash it with his fat little hands for 5 minutes before i call it and hose him off in the sink. all this to get 6 calories of almond butter into him. like, i just don’t buy that this is what ppl were up to 400 years ago.

@liz_love_lace @bzogrammer I agree. seems incomplete to assume that the human side has things that are illegible, but not vice versa I also expect the illegible area to be much larger in proportion. Its limited size here is a representation of a limited curiosity, rather than its true size

@etirabys there was a speed threshold that transitioned baby to toddler for me. once they can book it across the room and collide with something, it's toddler time. (one of the parenting moments sad and exciting at the same time)

"if she's toddling up to someone, she's not a baby anymore" there's a grace period where you can still say baby if she only started doing it a week ago and also she is so little and has fat cheeks. check the handbook

Years ago, I worked w @agranato42 on a project where he had cause to say "investor" a lot. He happens to pronounce this the way you say "Skeletor", final syllable rhyming w "store". Now everyone in my house says "you have a visitor" in that way when the baby toddles up to someone

I understand having a love/hate relationship with Solidworks and it's inevitable that you're going to blow up a part or assembly with bad constraints but if you haven't figured out how to properly parametrize your work it's genuinely a skill issue
Faraz Khan@faraz_r_khan

Solidworks - one of the most popular cad software sucks so bad that the advice from experienced mech-es is to simply use as little parametric modeling / references as possible otherwise “bad things will happen”. Crazy you all deal with this daily 😅

@milspecshitpost disagree brother. people think you can parameterize an assembly (the CAD companies say you can) and you can’t

@etirabys 4mil plastic safety film? Presses on clear, holds shards safely in place if the glass is broken. Usually sold as a B&E deterrent for outside windows but it should work and is fairly affordable, I'm seeing $28 for a 30″ x 36″ sheet youtube.com/watch?v=V_APQ3…

We moved into a house with beautiful built-in wood and glass cabinets. Fascinatingly, this semi-destines us to have pointless conflict with kids for the next decade. (The alternatives are to decide we're ok with the glass risk, or to replace gorgeous cabinets with shitty ones.)
