My father couldn't lift a lot of weight, and he wasn't all that handy with tools. His manliness showed up in these ways: 1. He worked diligently at a job -- selling insurance on commission, no salary -- that was demanding physically and, unless you were cool enough to weather the down times, emotionally. He was on the road every day. But he did not bring his work home with him, nor did a bad day or a bad week alter his mood one bit. Whatever frustrations the job brought, as even the best jobs will, he bore himself. 2. He did not indulge himself in expensive hobbies. What he earned was for the family, and he made it stretch. 3. He never spoke a word of criticism of my mother. He loved her devotedly. He loved the four of us kids, too. He did correct us kids, but it was rare that he NEEDED to do that; and when he did, he did it calmly. We all simply assumed that if he said, "Do this," we did it, and if he said, "Stop doing that," we stopped. 4. He stuck up for our rights, but not to the harm of other people's. We all took it for granted that you didn't pick on kids smaller than you, and you did not show disrespect to your elders. 5. He did not use foul language, ever. He did not carry tales, ever. He did not disparage people -- if he didn't like somebody, he would ignore him. 6. He never got carried away by emotionalism. He saw through most of that stuff. 7. Most important: he was a man of faith and prayer. It was unthinkable that we would miss Mass on a Sunday. The four of us kids had our ups and downs in this regard when we went through the straits of our 20's, more up than down, but we all of us are strong believers and we all attend Mass every Sunday -- at the least. The Left USED to be able to make men like my father (who voted for Humphrey in 1968, but could not vote for a Democrat after that); it's been a long time since.

@GraceysButler President Biden is recovering from a respiratory illness. His health and ability to make decisions is a public concern. We’ve done the acting president thing in the past if it’s needed.

@DutchLombrowski But there’s no point to hiding it. There needs to be a point to a conspiracy, otherwise it’s just elaborate mental masturbation.

Please think what the point of a conspiracy would be before spouting one. “Biden didn’t sign that/ do it on camera so he’s either incapacitated or dead” ok, so Harris’d be president by operation of law and take over the campaign anyway, so like what’s your point?

@politicalmath We pick out movies sometimes by looking at old box office lists. “Let’s watch something from 1992!” is a pretty great game. I really miss that volume.

1999 had a new movie from Scorsese, Kubrick, Cronenberg, Lynch, Burton, Mann, Fincher. It was out of control And I'm completely and intentionally ignoring the movie that won Best Picture that year b/c it was maybe the 90th best movie of the year

@BrianCPT I think the pyre scene into the Ewok celebration is a perfect ending. The end hits differently as I’ve gotten older and we’ve lost some of the actors. Great moment in BTTF too! Another one that makes me feel 8 again.

I know I’m old now because the end of Return of the Jedi makes me emotional, when for the last 4 decades it never did. Also, I now get the feels when George McFly says, “Are you OK?” to Lorraine after he knocks out Biff in Back to the Future.

@bendreyfuss @RealMikeKeaton Awesome read! He loves himself, but he’s a great storyteller. He also wrote an amazing book debunking Kennedy assignation conspiracy theories.

A few hours ago I was drunk and curled up in bed and then instead of going to sleep downloaded the kindle version of a book from 1996 about all the things the OJ prosecutors did wrong, and now I’m sober and wondering if this was really better than sweet precious sleep
