Our Lady of Mt Carmel, Virginia, ripped out its theatre-style seating & freestanding table altar, and put in a marble carved sanctuary with rails. This parish, once featured in the 2001 book “Ugly as Sin”, changed its entire look in 2024. The floor was flattened, side pews removed, crucifix added, and a proper altar of sacrifice was built.

@stodiodio @lilbernadette @JamieBraziel I’m fortunate to be in a loving marriage with no abuse, and I trust this nun’s judgment over random people on the internet. And so does my bishop because he specifically asked her to be in the tribunal.

@stodiodio @lilbernadette @JamieBraziel That doesn’t always happen before the marriage though. Love bombing and playing up to her parents is not an uncommon tactic. The nun I’m speaking of was well educated in martial matters and the psychology of abuse.

@stodiodio @lilbernadette @JamieBraziel And since was(may still be) on the tribunal it was her job to submit any parishioner applications. She had a very strict policy about submitting them, any small doubts about approval & she was not submitting it.

@alanfredffb @ClaireMPLS Those self checkouts required real people to make them. IIRC 12 people to make 1 self scanner as opposed to 1 regular checkout cashier.

@lilbernadette @JamieBraziel I knew a nun on my diocese annulment tribunal, and she said that evidence of early abuse in the marriage was generally considered as testimony that the abuser’s vows were invalid. I’m aware that as a matter of course marriages are presumed valid from the outset

@lilbernadette @JamieBraziel But the annulment process for that wouldn’t be hard to do as a lot of abusers hide their true nature until after the wedding.

@JamieBraziel The Catholic Church says divorce under the circumstances is fine for the protection of someone, but that does not mean the marriage is dissolved in the eyes of the church or that they are free to remarry. Divorce is civil/legal only.
