Major Key to note 1. Understanding where they form Gold and diamonds form in very different ways, so geologists start by targeting the right environments. Gold is often found in areas with past volcanic or hydrothermal activity. Hot fluids deep underground carry gold and deposit it in cracks, forming veins. While Diamonds form much deeper in the Earth’s mantle under extreme pressure and temperature, then get brought to the surface by volcanic eruptions through special rocks called kimberlites. 2. Reading the landscape (fieldwork) Geologists study the terrain for signs: For gold: river sediments, quartz veins, and areas with historical erosion For diamonds: unusual volcanic pipes (kimberlite pipes) They often start with mapping rock types and structures, faults, folds, and ancient river systems.
