The @WelshConserv are calling for change, the people of #Wales are calling for change, and now the Welsh Government #Coronavirus adviser is calling for a review.
The cruel 5-mile rule needs scrapping!

#SalisburyPoisonings was brilliant, giving us an unique insight into the effects of the events on ordinary lives. Great acting by cast.
A shocking situation though. Wondering whether UK was tough enough on Russia.
English

@revgpp Not a bad idea. We should probably let more time pass too before we erect them. At the end of the day though, all these decisions are political and always open to corruption.
English

@DyfedWyn The whole statue thing makes me think that we should do what the Vatican does before beatifying someone: appoint a Devil's Advocate - someone to say why we shouldn't put a statue up when we are considering doing so.
English

As many faults as #Churchill had, when President of the Board of Trade in the Liberal government (c.1908) he brought in the first unemployment benefit - covering 3m men in the most vulnerable industries.
English

@revgpp I like ‘remythologising’ though. Reminds me of Bultmann. I’ve gone back to another book I’ve read before - Racialising Jesus. On the racial roots of much of 20th century biblical studies.
English

@DyfedWyn Yeah, the binary stuff irritates me. May I should have used something like 'hagiographic'; we can all tend to 'saint' people- more so after death.
English

@revgpp I haven’t seen much remythologisation. I have seen a lot of binary shouting ‘but he was a racist’ v ‘but he won the war’. Which is why I started to read Jenkins’s biography to get a full picture. His reforming zeal, I knew nothing about and give me a better understanding of him.
English

@DyfedWyn His faults have always been known, but we seem to be in a phase of 'aggressive remythologisation' with him that does no one any good- BoJo is trying to use him as a weapon in the 'culture wars', which is wrong: he was as he was which is why we put a statue up of him.
English

@revgpp His faults are well known. And he had many of them.
I’m reading Jenkins’s biography and currently on his time as HS, hence the tweets.
English

@DyfedWyn He is. To truly admire someone you have to be aware of their weaknesses. I think his statue should stay (his role in WW2 dwarfs many things) but I raise you Gallipoli, South Wales miners, the Raj, his explicit anti semitism etc
English

Also as Home Secretary, he was a prison reformer, giving special privileges to ‘political’ prisoners (eg Suffragettes), as well as driving down the number of men jailed for being in debt.
Complicated fellow, our #Churchill.
English

Another fact about #Churchill - when he was Home Secretary in 1911 he introduced the Mines Act, a series of health and safety measures in what was a very dangerous industry.

It would truly awful if the aid budget - which does so much good in the world - was to be used in this way.
(((Dan Hodges)))@DPJHodges
Going for the Overseas Aid budget confirms it. Cummings wants to move away from Covid and shift on to a Culture War footing.
